18 Dec 2020 – Covenant Meals – Part 7

Luke 22:20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Our Dear Lord Jesus replaced the old covenant that He had made with the patriarchs, priests, prophets and the Pharisees with the “new covenant”. Abraham was called the friend of God. James 2:23 “Abraham … was called God’s friend. Moses was called the servant of God, Numbers 12:7 My servant Moses; he is faithful in all my household. John the Baptist was called the voice of God. Isaiah 40:3 A voice is calling in the wilderness. The Pharisees were called to be “teachers”. Whereas, we are called the children of God. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name. Children born into a family automatically become legal heir to the wealth of the family. Son born to royalty becomes a prince at birth.  The new covenant that entitles us with “sonship” was birthed at the cross. As we celebrate the heroes of a nation on independence day, we celebrate our new identity in Christ when we take communion. The new covenant proclaims the Lord’s death until He comes.

The night before His death, Jesus instituted the new covenant; at the cross He constituted it and by His resurrection He validated it. Communion is the new covenant that reiterates the sonship, renews the partnership and re-establishes the friendship.  The new covenant of sonhood overrules the old covenant of servanthood. Priesthood and prophethood are embedded in sonhood.

Communion, the new covenant meal:

1.     Partnership: The new covenant refreshes our terms of our partnership with the Lord. John 15:5 If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. We can never do anything that has eternal value without the partnership of the Holy Spirit. Our success, career, championships and comradeships will be valuable only in partnership with Jesus. Only what impacts eternity, truly counts. The new covenant is when the celestial becomes one with the terrestrial. Communion, the new covenant connects us with the divine resources through divine partnership.

2.     Friendship: The new covenant rejuvenates our friendship with the Lord. Jesus called us friends to entrust us with divine secrets (John 15:15). Friendship will create a longing to spend time with the Lord. Jesus is a friend who will never disappoint us; who will never let us down or betray us. We will never be lonely once we start walking hand in hand as friends with the Lord. Communion is the new covenant that sparks divine friendship with the Lord.

3.     Sonship: The old covenant was a covenant of rule, rites and religiosity but the new covenant is the covenant of faith, favour and fervour. A son does not recite a prayer or a poem but confides, converses and communes with His Father. Communion, the new covenant has replaced the old covenant; wine that represents the blood of Jesus, replaces the blood of our ancestors, old nature, habits and character, inherited from our natural family and replaces with the nature of Christ. The blood of Jesus is transfused into our blood at the communion table authenticating us as His sons and daughters. Communion entitles us with divinity, identity and eternity.

Communion table is a table of divine impartation, insulation and ignition of the new covenant.

Hebrews 8:13 In speaking of a new covenant, He makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for the impartation of your identity by the transfusion of your body and blood through the communion elements of bread and wine. I am a new creation through the new covenant. Amen
