22 Dec 2020 – His Name – Part 4

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Finance companies promise ginormous returns but they go bust and disappear. Most political promises are manipulative and lack commitment. Friends and family make promises but when the emotions changes their commitment declines. A young couple are over the bliss when they sign the dotted line, but the bliss could turn into blame, bitterness and betrayal when the binding element of love weakens. In the midst of uncertain relationship we have the comforting Saviour who is our “Everlasting Father”. His promises are everlasting, His love for us never changes and His commitment never alters. Romans 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. He never withdraws the spiritual gifts and calling just because we have been unfaithful, ungrateful or uncommitted. We can quench and straggle the anointing by our disobedience but God will never revoke it. The strength (gift) of Samson was revived when he cried out in repentance.  The gifts might become dormant but not withdrawn. Our wavering does not shake the faithfulness of our God. Hence Jesus is the “Everlasting Father”.

Change is the only constant in life. However, in this uncertain world, the only constant that never changes is Christ. He will never reject us because we have failed, He will never hate us because we have betrayed and He will never give up on us because we have messed, missed and muddled.

Three important characteristics of the unchanging Everlasting Father:

1.     Covenant: His covenant is everlasting. The fulfilment of the covenant is dependent on the conditions but the conclusiveness of the covenant remains unchanged. Psalms 105:8 He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations. The callousness of our heart will incapacitate the covenant but will not invalidate it. Repentance, surrender and submission will resuscitate the covenant. God is not a human to change when we change. He just takes a step back, allows us to wallow in the world for a while and wait for us to run back to Him hurt and wounded! His covenant is everlasting.

2.     Compassion: His compassion is everlasting. Psalms 103:17 the love of the LORD remains forever with those who fear him. His love never changes even when we run far away from Him or hurt Him. The compassion of the father did not change when the prodigal son demanded for his share of the property and squandered all the wealth in promiscuity. It is not possible for a human parent to continue to love their children who have hurt them and tarnished their reputation. Such compassion is divine and exceptional. Favour of God is dependent on our obedience but the love of God never changes.     .

3.     Commitment: He is faithful even when we are unfaithful. Psalm 117:2 The LORD’s faithfulness endures forever. The Israelites who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years were grumblers, complainers and mourners. They were ungrateful, insensitive and callous however, the Lord never failed to rain manna every morning nor did He allow them to die of thirst. He served them from the bakery of heaven faithfully for 40 years. Our carelessness does not change the commitment of the everlasting Father.

The covenant that Christ has with us will outlive us and will continue for a thousand generations after us.

Ezekiel 16:60b I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I completely surrender to be covered by your everlasting compassion and covenant. Thank you for your faithfulness to me even though I have been unfaithful, failed and faltered over and over again. Amen
