31 Jan 2021 -Taming the Tongue – Part 3

Psalms 34:1-2 I will bless the LORD at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul boasts in the LORD; let the oppressed hear and rejoice.

Tongue echoes the voice of the soul. Our tongue will sing praises if our soul boasts of the goodness, greatness and graciousness of the Lord. No one can hear the boasts, praises or voice of our soul; it is the tongue that resounds the acclamation of our heart.   In other words, tongue testifies the attitude of the heart and the meditation of our mind. A rotten tongue is only the resonance of an ungrateful heart and bitter attitude. A question was asked to three men who were laying bricks, “what are you doing?” The first man replied – “laying bricks”; the second man responded “working for five lousy dollars an hour!”  the third man  boasted, “helping to build the great, grand cathedral to the worship of our God”.  All three were doing the same job but had three different attitudes hence, their testimony varied. “Taming the tongue” is “toning and tuning” the attitude of the heart to replay God’s thoughts and plans for our lives.

When the attitude on the inside is bigger than the problems on the outside, then the circumstance, challenges or crisis cannot control our tongue. 1 John 4:4 Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. The young lad David must have been 5 feet tall when he faced the 9 feet tall ginormous giant, but his God on the inside was ten time bigger, stronger and taller than the giant on the outside. Hence he was able to challenge and testify to the giant Goliath, This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. (1 Samuel 17:46). His testifying tongue was rooted in a toned, tuned and tamed attitude to trust the invincible Almighty God, even in adversity.

Taming the tongue is tuning and toning our attitude to testify the truth of God’s Word over our life:

1.     Tone: A toned attitude is the fruit of Godly values formed, groomed and cultivated with care and caution. When the foundations is built with bricks of faith, truth and trustworthiness, our attitude will become audacious and our tongue would become bold, brave and confident.  Proverbs 31:26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. A toned attitude tames the tongue.

2.     Tune: When our attitude is tuned to trust in God and not in our abilities, acumen or aptitude  our tongue will resound the promises not the probabilities, problems or predicted perils. When our heart is habitually tuned to boast in the awesomeness of our God, the enormity of the giant of sickness, stress, tension or trauma will shrink into a tiny minuscule. A tuned attitude tames the tongue.

3.     Testify: When our soul boasts in the greatness of our God and attitude is tenderised to testify His strength, we will not talk about the mountain but will talk to the mountain. The tongue that testifies the glory, grandeur and greatness of the Lord will never lament about the problems, troubles and crisis but will see victory through the eyes of faith and testify triumph as David did. Only a toned and tuned attitude can train and tame the tongue to testify during tough times.

Toning and tuning our attitude will automatically tone-down and tune-up the testimonies of our tongue.

Psalms 34:12-13 Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days 13 keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me to tone, tune and tenderise my thoughts and tame my tongue to testify your glory. Amen
