12 Feb 2021 – Songs – Part 1

Ephesians 5:19-20 Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

To our religious mind “songs” mean a bunch of words, poems and chords that are sung with musical sequence and repetition. We believe songs must be melodious, harmonious and rhythmic. However, Paul in his advice to the church in Ephesus says that they must talk to each other in psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. He counsels them to sing and make music from their heart to the Lord.

Hence “singing” in divine definition is not a talent given to the chosen few who have beautiful voices and exceptional musical talents.  Spiritual songs are not words and music in a song book but an outburst of thanksgiving, sung from the depth of our heart with an attitude of gratitude, praise and adoration.

There are songs sung from the vocal cords and there are songs sung from the heart. The songs sung in the Spirit are the songs that reach the throne room of Heaven and touch the heart of God. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Worship from the head does not reach the Lord, only worship from the heart does.

Meaningful music and spiritual songs that touch the heart of God:

1.     Nobel: Sincere songs from the spirit and heart are the only gift we can take to the Lord. We cannot please God with our voices, singing or our talents. Not everyone has been given the gift to sing but we can all sing praises from our heart.  Songs of thanksgiving with an attitude of gratitude is like a sweet incense that touches the heart of God.

2.     Nice: It does not matter how sweet we sound but how sincere we are in our praises. God doesn’t care about the tune or tenor, He searches for our truthfulness and trustworthiness. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day (Psalm 96:2). Songs of the heart might not have sequence but it must be sincere; it might not have a tune but it must be a testimony; it might not be fastidious but it must be victorious. Sweet yet insincere voices will scatter and dissipate in the air, but genuine yet flat spirit-filled noises will touch the heart of God.

3.     New: New songs are composed from new experiences. They need not be rhythmic repetitions, poetic connotations or mystical music. They are the day to day miracles that we enjoy which become a song of praise in a grateful heart. A brilliant morning, fresh air, the bright sunflowers in our garden, green traffic light, a note of appreciation from a friend or a boss, anything big or small can ignite the fire of praise in our heart. Find something new every day and make a joyful noise to touch the heart of God.

Not everyone is gifted to sing in a microphone, but everyone can make music in our heart. The sincere song from our heart not our lips will touch the heart of God and the attention of Heaven.

Hebrews 13:15 Let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise–the fruit of lips that openly profess His name.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I don’t need a stage or a worship team to lead me into a mode of worship. Teach me to speak, sing and offer sacrifice of praise from the sincerity of my heart. Make me genuine, authentic and admirable. Amen
