14 May 2021 – History – Part 1

Romans 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

The Bible is not just black prints on white pages which compile historical events, empires and evidence. It is the Living Word that picturizes God’s past, His present plans and future prospects. The history of the past is written to teach us endurance, empower us and inculcate living hope in us for the future. The Bible is not an outdated epic that accounts from the beginning of the world to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, but it is the living, enlightening and encouraging Word that speaks to us even today.

There are no irrelevant details in the Bible. Every word, every syllable from the table of contents to the last full stop can speak profoundly to us. The current crisis with the pandemic, the challenges with the epidemic and the calamities have not shocked God!  The Israelites survived several plagues and Jesus warned us about the ones to come. The anthology of various scripts compiled into 66 books of the Bible were written by 40 different scribes, at different time periods but by one author, the Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Hence there is continuity, longevity and purity in the Bible and is unsurprisingly the bestselling book of all times.

How and why is the Bible relevant even to us today?

1.     Hindsight: The Bible gives us a hindsight and a foresight of the present crisis. It gives us an insight into the current calamity and assurance for the future. We can find answers for any and all problems in the pages of the scriptures. The cure to the pandemic, pornography or pestilence is in the Bible. We can look into the future of the current catastrophe through the eyes of the scripture. The retrospection of the past incidents in the Bible will direct our present and instil hope for the future.

2.     Hidden: The Bible could appear to be a book of parables, stories and analogies but the hidden secrets will be revealed to the children who wait at His feet. Colossians 1:26 The mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. Search the scriptures for hidden truth and answers for COVID-19 in the Bible.

3.     Helper: The Holy Spirit is our Helper, Guide and Lead who will help us to navigate through the scriptures. John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. The Holy Spirit will apportion the meal (the scriptures) into bite size palatable mouthful nourishment for those who seek Him. He is the still small voice who speaks to us when we are petrified. Seek the help of the Holy Spirit when you open your Bible.

Spend time reading the Living Word to overcome the perplexing current events, devastating pestilence and overwhelming, frightening uncertainty of the future.

Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.

Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, speak to me as I read the Bible and help me to understand the deep secrets that are hidden about the present times and implant hope for the future.  Amen
