21 July 2021 – Small is Big – Part 6

Matthew 17:20 Jesus replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Small is not little in God’s economy. The mustard seed is around one-tenth of an inch in size. The plant grows to about up to 6.5 feet in height and the seeds are  rich in essential antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Mustard is an inevitable essential in any cuisine around the world. Jesus rebuked His disciples who were struggling to drive out the demon in a little boy and said that their faith was “little”. However, ironically He said, if they had faith as “small” as a mustard seed nothing would be impossible for them.

Thought is a seed. The woman with a haemorrhage for twelve years sowed the mustard seed of faith in her humble heart before it grew into a plant to bear fruits of healing. She thought, “If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed” (Mark 5:28). The seed of thought originates in the mind but must be planted in the heart for the seed to germinate. The quality of the seed will determine if the seed is a “grain of mustard” or a “grain of the sand” in the seashore. A negative thought will be like a grain of sand but a positive thought will be like the planting of a mustard seed on fertile ground.

Small is not little:

1.   Size: The grains of the sand in the seashore and the grains of a mustard seed are more or less the same size. The sand is little and static but the mustard is small and full of potency. Both are little in size whereas the seed has the potential to grow. The small seed is packed with power to explode if planted in good soil. It is the quality of faith and not the size that will move mountains. It is not the magnitude of faith that matters but the power hidden in it. A seed of faith with the potential to grow is small but not little.

2.   Speak: Seed of faith speaks life. Speaking, faith grows. The faith of the woman with the issue of blood spoke to her to get herself dressed and to drag herself into the presence of Jesus. This is why it is crucially important to confess our faith. Declaring into the future, prophesying into the unknown and professing the promises of God is not chanting but calling our blessings into being. Speaking faith starts small but does not stop growing, flowering and fruiting.

3.   Spicy: Mustard seeds are not hot nor pungent until they are cracked or ground and mixed with a cold liquid. The icy cold storms of trials crack the seed of faith and add spice and flavour to our spiritual life.  Faith must be spicy and not stale. The flavour, savour and spiciness of our faith cannot be tasted unless the tests crack, grind and break the mustard seed of faith. Spicy faith is small yet strong.

Small is not little when the seed of faith is spicy and strong.

Romans 4:17 the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may my faith not be a grain of sand but a strong pungent mustard seed that flavours my life with tenacity, purity and stability. Small is not little in your kingdom. Amen.
