06 September 2021 – The Blood – Part 4

Hebrews 9:12 He entered once for all into the Holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

The Blood of Jesus redeems.

Slavery in ancient Rome or Greece was a legalized practice where ‘humans’ were traded like commodities. The slaves and their families were the property of the owners and they were grossly mistreated. Redeeming a slave would mean paying the full price and releasing them from the brutal taskmaster. Sin enslaves us to the devil and the kingdom of darkness. Sin entangles us in hidden habits, unhealthy addictions and despicable lifestyles. When we fall into the enticing trap of satan we become his property. The same demons that lured us to sin will also blame, torment and stigmatize us. As slaves were segregated by their special clothing, the garment of sin and shame separated us from God. One slave could not redeem another slave. Redemption could be done only by someone wealthier, more influential and powerful. Similarly, there was no flawless human being on earth who could redeem us from sin, hence the superior blood of Jesus had to be shed. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Furthermore, animal blood can never be transfused to a human. Human body would reject the blood of an animal as the composition of the blood of animals is different to that of humans. If our perishing natural body rejects animal blood how much more would the imperishable soul? Animal sacrifice was only a stop-gap arrangement until Jesus came to redeem us. Hence the blood of Jesus was paid as a ransom to set us free from the slavery of sin and the shackles of curses.

The blood of Jesus redeems:

  1. Break: Normally, slaves have iron fetters around their legs that stop them from running away from their masters. As soon as a slave is redeemed, the chains of slavery are broken. Likewise, the blood redeems us from the stigma of sin and the taste of the corrupt cravings. Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. The blood of Jesus breaks the desire to lustful and licentious sinful behaviours.
  1. Bold: The posture of a slave is very different to a son. The blood changes our status from slaves to sons. Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus. The blood gives us the boldness to go to the Lord in prayers not with our heads shaggy and hung low in shame but with boldness, courage and excitement. His blood endows us with boldness.
  1. Bridge: The blood of Jesus is the bridge that connects divinity and humanity. Colossians 1:20 and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things…by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross. As blood that carries nutrients and energy to the different body parts, the blood of Jesus lushes our soul with confidence and reunites us with God. The blood of Jesus is the only conduit  that can reconcile us with the Holy God.

The blood of Jesus redeems our past, bridges our broken relationship with God and secures our future.

Hebrews 13:12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through His own blood.

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, thank you for paying the price and redeeming me from the slavery of sin to set me free from the fetters of fear and shame. Amen.
