18 September 2021 – Light & Legacy – Part 2

Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Jesus, ‘the light of the world’, looks at His followers and says, “You a light to the world”. He compares us to a city built on a hill and a lamp on a lampstand that brightens up the house. We are not the original ‘light energy’ that was created on day 1. ‘Light energy’ was created before the light engines were created. The source of that light energy was God Himself. The light that Jesus commissioned His disciples to reflect is the light(glory) that shines from Him.

In simple layman’s language, the light that we shine is like the light that the moon reflects. The Moon does not produce light on its own, it only reflects the light of the sun. When the Moon appears to be getting bigger, it’s ‘waxing’ and when it looks like it’s getting smaller, it’s ‘waning’.

The application of the allegory is very simple as well. When we are closest to the Son of God, our influence will be the strongest and our light shines brightest. When we move away from the Lord, we will be like the waning moon. The light that we reflect must radiate the Heavenly colours of truth, trust and triumph. When our testimony shines the passion and compassion of Jesus, we are like the waxing moon and in alignment with the Lord. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven (Matthew 5:16).

Jesus said you are the light of the World:

  1. Waning: Is our light waning? Is our light jaded by worries of life? When worry vexes our worship, we can be rest assured that our light would start waning. We receive our brightness, boldness and beauty in our reverential adoration to the King. Irrespective of what we are going through, when we learn to praise and turn our face towards the Son of righteousness, His light will gleam though our lives. Don’t let your worries wane your worship.
  1. Waxing: Is your light waxing? Our light is waxing when our good deeds glorify our Father in Heaven. If it promotes us and positions us to be celebrated by men, then, it is not waxing. It might appear to increase in brightness but if we are not reflecting the glory of God, we will soon run out of fuel. We might do the right things for the wrong reasons. Then we are waning and not waxing. When we serve not to be appreciated or applauded by men but to be accentuated in Heaven, then we are waxing. May our waxing glorify God.
  1. Waves: Full moon increases the tidal force on earth. Once the face of the Moon is fully turned towards the Sun, it is Full Moon. High tides and low tides are generated by the gravitational pull of the moon. When we fully radiate the heart of Christ, our influence on the darkened world will be like high tide. May the gravity of our influence be ‘compassion’ and not ‘compulsion’.

We are the light to the world that is darkened by frustration, disappointment and betrayal. Divine light that reflects through us will outlive us and leave a lasting legacy.

Matthew 5:16a Let your light shine before others.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, May my face ever be turned towards you like a full moon that reflects the glory of the sun. Help me to glow your glory to the world. Amen.
