22 November 2021 – Raise Your Bar – Part 4

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

Thomas Edison was disqualified and expelled from school as a special-needs kid. The disqualified slow-learner went on to invent the light bulb, motion picture camera, telephone, phonograph and has over 1,000 patents registered in his name. We would limit God if we focus on our accolades, abilities, achievements and awards. The certificates, class or capacity would constrain us from God’s vision and promises.

It is easy for us to retrospectively believe that God could transform a shepherd into a King or an illiterate, ignorant bunch of followers into elegant, emphatic and enthusiastic preachers yet, we limit God by the barriers of our strength, skill and status. God has chosen the foolish to shame the wise and the weak to shame the strong as only the unwise, despised and weedy will not be puffed with pride with their promotion. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him (1 Corinthians 1:28-29). The walls of class, caste and capabilities limit God.

Breakdown the bars of limitations:

  1. Size: The inadequacy of our resources, qualification or finance can become the barrier that limits God. God does not need our intelligence or our money to fulfill His mission. Jesus used the lunchbox of a little unnamed  boy to feed the five thousand men and their families. It doesn’t matter what we have, but it matters who has it. When the five loaves and two fishes were transferred from the hands of the little boy into the hands of Jesus, it multiplied. God will give us a promotion that we are not qualified for, a position that we don’t deserve and power that we have not earned when we surrender our abilities and aspirations to Him.  Size of our talent is magnified when it is surrendered into the hands of the Saviour.
  1. Status: Our status in the society, family or community can become a barrier and limit God. Wealth, wisdom, networth, popularity or prosperity can become a mental blockade to our divine destiny. A word of wisdom from the little unnamed servant slave girl (2 Kings 5) in the house of Naaman, healed the Commander-in-Chief of Aram, from leprosy. We are who God says we are. The failure of our forefathers or our own frailty are not obstacles but ladders for our future. Social status has no bearing on our spiritual stature.
  1. Skill: The skill, training and qualification become a hurdle that limits God. God used the untrained teenager David to slay the giant.  David was the overlooked and ostracized kid of the family. His brother Eliab infantilized him when David stepped forward to fight the giant. God did not require a skilled soldier; He only needed an obedient, subservient shepherd boy to slay the giant. Secular skill will be supernaturally up-skilled for our success.

Raise your bars of limitation – Our size, status or skill does not concern God.

1 Corinthians 1:26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, My capacity, qualification or social standing has no bearing to accomplish your vision for me. Help me to break the limitations of human skill, status and strength. Amen.
