19 February 2022 – What do you do? – Part 1

Isaiah 40:29: He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

What do you do when you become weary and tired? Tired of waiting for an answer from God? Weary of battling with the same weakness or going around the same mountain again and again? When we are fatigued with frustrations and worn out by struggles, our soul becomes tired of waiting. Discouragement grips our heart and emotions drain our mental stability and strength. We lose our enthusiasm to read the Bible, praise, pray and proclaim the promises. Emotional weariness will cause spiritual weakness. Spiritual weakness makes us vulnerable to satanic attacks. When you are barraged with hopeless, negative or bleak thoughts, you are under a spiritual attack.

The devil tried to attack Jesus when He went on a fast for 40 days but after three failed attempts we read, he left Him until an opportune time (Luke 4:13b). Physical exhaustion makes us susceptible to spiritual attacks. Beware, “opportune time” for diabolical attacks are during physical weakness or prolonged waiting. We are not supersonic. Even the most powerful prophet was not a superman, exempt from exhaustion. When fatigued, take a break, rest and renew your strength in the Lord. God won’t do what you can do for yourself.

Three simple steps to overcome weariness and spiritual exhaustion:

1.     Wait: Months or years of waiting for a prayer request to be answered can weaken our faith. Faith is the foundation of our foresight. When faith grows faint our futuristic vision grows dim. When waiting is wearing you out, don’t speak unbelief or doubt. Don’t talk about the probabilities or possible failures. You are my place of quiet retreat, I wait for Your Word to renew me. (Psalm 119:114). Withdraw, stop lamenting to people, turn your phone off, shut the door and bask under the presence of the Lord. Have an honest hour with God. Tell Him how you feel and ask Him to strengthen you. Start reading the Word even if it is difficult to concentrate or contemplate. Wait until His Word renews your mind before you leave your quiet retreat.

  1. Worship: Weariness in our soul will drain the worship away. When you find it hard to express your adoration, call a prayerful friend to pray with you. Turn on some worship music and sing along. Read an excerpt of a Psalm and turn God’s Word into worship. Worship turns pessimism into potent.
  1. Work: Weariness is followed by withdrawal. We would be tempted to abandon our involvement in helping, praying or interceding for others as our hopeful expectation is still unmet. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9). Don’t slack in your commitment in giving or serving. Weariness coupled with hopelessness will cause droopiness. You cannot sow wheat and reap weeds.   So, don’t get weary in doing good, the harvest is on the way.

When you are weary, wait, worship and work relentlessly to reap the blessings.

Jeremiah 31:25 I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.

Prayer: Jesus, You are my Strong Deliverer, help me to shake off the spiritual attacks of weariness and worship you. Amen.
