17 March 2022 – Miraculous March – Part 6

John 9:2-3 His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Miracles have a purpose. Miracles are not magic shows to entertain the crowd. Jesus did miracles to glorify God. He does not do miracles to prove His divinity but to deliver the broken and the bound.  The myopic mind would think that a deformity or infirmity is directly related to sin. The disciples of Jesus in John chapter 9 in their question to Jesus had already concluded that the blindness was a result of sin. Jesus explained connection between the morbidity and the miracle. God is not the cause of any illness or violence. He is not the author of evil but He capitalizes on the sickness, famine and famish that have been lashed out at us by the demonic realm. Jesus healed the blind man to exhibit the miraculous healing power of God and His authority over bondage and blindness.

Prayer for a miracle without a purpose is like catching the wind with bare hands. The wind will just blow right through our fingers and cannot be contained. Similarly the power of God cannot be enjoyed without a purpose. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures (James 4:3). Seek the miracle purposefully to glorify God.

Mandate-6: Miracles have a purpose.

1.     Self-Centered:  Selfish and self-centered prayers are small minded prayers. “Bless me, bless my family and my dog” is not theoretically wrong but theologically unyielding.  God did not choose an elderly couple and bless them with a miracle baby to give them a heir to their wealthy inheritance. The miraculous blessing for Abraham was endowed on him to become a blessing to others. “And I will bless you, And make your name great. And so you shall be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2). Self-centered prayers are empty prayers.

2.     Self-Promotion: Miracles cannot be bought with money. There was a sorcerer who tried to bribe the early apostles Peter and John to get the miracle working power of God. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money (Acts 8:18). Simon brought curse upon himself. Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! (Acts 8:20).Where money is demanded in exchange of a miracle, the source is demonic and not divine. Miraculous power used for self-promotion is accursed.

  1. Significance: The sole purpose of a miracle is to glorify God. Lazarus was raised from the dead but, he died again. The miracles that we enjoy on earth will die when we die but as long as we live the miracles must glorify God. The significance of a miracle is to accentuate the power of God.

Mandate 6 – Miracles have a purpose. March victoriously into a miraculous March.

John 9:25 He replied “I was blind but now I see!”.

Prayer: Lord God, You are awesome in power and majesty. Be glorified through my life.  Amen.
