30 August 2022 – Be Still – Part 3

Ecclesiastes 5:2 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.

Silence and stillness are powerful nonverbal prayers.  It is in silence and stillness that we empty our desires and desperations, to allow God to fill us with His aspirations and insights. Stillness is a time of refueling in God’s presence. Learning to rest in a tumultuous turmoil will refuel us to pursue the race we are called to run. The wisest man who ever lived on earth, King Solomon, gives us a very profound advice “Do not be quick with your mouth”. He says don’t make vows in haste and in desperation. Silence your soul before God and listen to His voice.

“In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence.”― Mother Teresa,

This world teaches us to empty ourselves in order to attain calmness and contentment. However, there is no empty space in our mind. The mind is a real estate that will either be occupied by God or the devil. Emptying our mind to ‘think about nothing’ will unconsciously entertain the enemy. The Bible teaches us to surrender ourselves in order to be refilled and refueled by God’s thoughts, God’s plans and God’s will.

Stillness recharges and refuels our soul:

1.     Silence: Instructing God, telling Him what He should do, when He should do it and how He should do it, is foolishness. When we are confused by waves of conundrums, remain silent and listen to the Lord.  Keep silent, and I will teach you wisdom. (Job 33:33). Silence and stillness before God imparts wisdom.

2.     Stillness:  Entering into the presence of God is like a stupendous sacred glorious cloud. “The Lord is in His holy temple, let all the earth keep silence before Him.” (Habakkuk 2:20). To enjoy intimacy in our relationship with God, we must train and disciple our soul to sit at His feet in stillness. Stillness and silence is the language of intimacy.

3.     Surrender: Stillness must always be preceded by surrender. If we hold on to ‘our wants’, our soul will be troubled and petrified of the outcome. Surrendering will fill us with God’s prospects and God’s purpose. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship” (Romans 12:1). An unsurrendered soul is steeped in stubbornness. Surrendering will keep our soul still and serene.

Be still in the presence of the Lord to be refilled and refueled with godliness.

Zephaniah 1:7 Stand in silence in the presence of the Sovereign LORD.

Prayer: King Jesus, discipline my soul to be still before you to draw wisdom in my weariness and to enjoy intimacy and serenity even in turbulent tornados. Help me to be still before you. Amen.
