11 September 2022 – Grace – Part 1

Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

“God’s Grace” is not a Christian cliché, it is the unmerited favour of God on unworthy sinners like you and me. Grace is a gift from God. Grace is God’s kindness that was not earned.  Grace brings freedom to the repenting sinner, liberty to the incarcerated and dignity to the ostracized. Grace is the undeserved love of God that never gives up on in spite of our repeated rebellion and repudiation. Many are under the misunderstanding that grace gives them the permit to live promiscuously and repent daily.  No, Grace does not give us the license to keep on sinning but gives us the tenacity to unfasten ourselves from reeking sinful habits. Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? (Romans 2:4). Grace not only convicts but also converts and transforms.

“Grace is the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off.” Max Lucado.

The parable of the prodigal son is the perfect example of the ‘Grace of God’. The prodigal who repented would have rehearsed his confession as he slowly paced towards his home. ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son’ (Luke 15:21). He would have imagined that His father would reprimand him and rebuke him before the servants. He was willing to endure the insults as long as he was accepted back as a slave. However, we see grace gushing forth like a mighty river. The father ran towards him, received him with love and restored him as the legal heir of his house.

GRACE means that all of your mistakes now serve a purpose instead of shame – Brené Brown.

The Gift of Grace:

1.     Envy: God’s grace over our lives makes our enemies envious. Our opponents are absolutely right in judging that we don’t deserve the honour, admiration or approval from God or man. Grace overrides the condemnation of the enemy. The older brother of the prodigal was envious and outrageous at the unlimited forgiveness and unmerited favour given to the unruly younger sibling. The unmerited grace over our lives will make our opponents envious!

2.     Encouragement: God’s grace gives us the confidence that we are not condemned but loved and accepted by God. It is not our good works or generosity but only God’s grace that can come closer to Him. God’s grace silences the condemning voices that try to chain us with shame. Grace encourages.

3.     Endowment: Grace endows us with honour. “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet (Luke 15:22). Grace reinstates us to the original position as the son/daughter. The world might look at us as a fallen sinner but Grace endows us with power, authority and honour.

Grace is a gift from God.

2 Timothy 2:1 Be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus.

Prayer: God of Grace, the unmerited favour to be called your son/daughter is beyond my comprehension. Thank you dear Jesus. Amen
