16 September 2022 – Grace – Part 6

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The Peacock Throne of the Mughal Empire, canopied in silk and encrusted in precious jewels, was twice the cost of the Taj Mahal.  The lavish throne was commissioned by Shah Jahan who also built the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan custom made this extortionate extravagance during the Mughal Golden Age in the 17th century but it was stolen in 1739 when Nader Shah of Persia ransacked Delhi. The most palatial and precious throne was dismembered and disappeared.

However, there is a throne that is established for ever. Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever (Psalm 45:6a).  The Lord God Almighty sits on the “Throne of Grace”.  The access card to God’s throne of Grace is the ‘blood of Jesus’. No one can come to God’s throne of grace without being washed by the blood. And he(High Priest) always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance (Hebrews 9:7). Recommendations from saints or rewards for our good works cannot take us to the throne of grace. Grace is the underserved favour of God that empowers, qualifies and promotes us to positions that we are not worthy of. Jesus is the only way to the grace and unmerited favour of God.

The throne of Grace is the presence of God. Only a humble, contrite and grateful soul washed by the blood of Jesus can draw near the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace. God’s mercy covers our sins and crowns us with credentials.

Throne of Grace:

1.     Gratitude: A heart of gratitude draws us close to the throne of grace. A sinful woman brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment (Luke 7:37b-38). This repenting hooker found the throne of grace at the feet of Jesus. A heart of gratitude will find grace and receive forgiveness and freedom.

2.     Attitude: An attitude of humility draws us close to the throne of God. Jesus in the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector taught us the attitude that finds the grace of God. The prideful Pharisee boasted about his prayer life, fasting and purity whereas, “the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner’ (Luke 18:13). The puffed Pharisee was far away from the throne of grace but the humble tax collector was under the shadow of God’s bountiful grace.

3.     Beatitude (Supreme blessedness): The throne of grace is the prayer closet for ‘those who are humble, contrite in spirit, and who tremble at God’s word’ (Isaiah 66:2). Favour, mercy and blessings inundate those who find the throne of grace.

Throne of grace is the shadow of God’s goodness.

Lamentations 3:22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end.

Prayer: Father God, I will bask under the shadow of your throne of grace to receive mercy and forgiveness; grace and favour from you. Amen
