31 October 2022 – What is Faith? – Part 2

John 11:40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

Faith is the undergirding condition of our contract/covenant with God. Faith is the fundamental condition for our prayers and petitions to be answered. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 envisaged the fulfillment of God’s covenant “by faith”. The phrase “By Faith” is mentioned 22 times in this chapter. By faith Abel (vs 4); By faith Enoch (vs 5); By faith Noah (vs 7); By faith Abraham (vs 8); who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. (Hebrews 11:33-34). Faith unlocks divine promises, providence and protection. Faith allows the celestial to intervene and interrupt the terrestrial. All promises are conditional. One of the primary conditions for God’s promises to come to fruition is “faith”.

Many have ‘abstract’ faith. They believe that there is some supernatural power governing the universe but their faith is not in the Word of God or on Jesus who died for them. Faith is not some theoretical or fluid concept. Faith is the subject matter of our covenant with God. God will not be able to fulfill His promises unless we execute our side of the contract.  This is why Jesus asked the two blind men who came to Him for healing, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” (Matthew 9:28). Doubt, disbelief, anxiety and apprehensions are the main causes of contractual failures.

Faith is the basic condition for the fulfillment of God’s promises:

1.     Unbelief: Unbelief drums into our ears that God will not do it for us. The demonic voice of doubt does not say that God is not able; it only reiterates that we are unworthy and our faith will never measure up to God’s standards. The demonic lies insinuate that we are disqualified for God to perform the miracle in our lives. He (Jesus) did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief (Matthew 13:58). Unbelief closes the hand of God from doing mighty miracles.

2.     Unforgiveness: Hoarding unforgiveness breaches our contract with God. God will not hear our prayers when we have unforgiveness hidden in our heart. Your sins have hidden His face from you, so that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2). When we can think of an offence and it doesn’t hurt anymore we have been set free from the cage of unforgiveness. Unforgiveness shudders faith and shuts the favour of heaven.

3.     Undergird: Faith undergirds our thoughts, talks and testimonies. God looks for a simple soul that can trust Him in all situations. Faith believes that God hears everyone who diligently seeks Him and trusts that His wisdom has a better solution to all our perturbations.

Faith is the pivotal condition in our covenant/contract with God.

Hebrew 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Prayer: Father God, help me to drive out all doubt and unbelief. May my faith be steadfast in you and your promises.  Amen
