05 December 2022 – Smart Casuals – Part 2

Proverbs 31:22 She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

There was an interesting article on “Revenge Spending” in The Guardian in July 2022. The article talks about the findings of a survey done in the UK. As the living cost crisis has been rocketing high, UK shoppers have been slashing their budgets on clothes, fueling a boom in revenge spending or buying that they missed during the pandemic!

“The first step to being respected is to look respectable”.

There are several lessons we can learn about fashion designing from the virtuous woman. She made her own tapestry. Tapestry is a canvas or a piece of thick textile fabric with designs formed by weaving embroidery. Not everyone is a seamstress but the display of her artwork was an allegorical representation of the hard work that she invested on our family, spouse, children and friends. The seamless and selfless investment that we make into the life of others will be displayed as virtual tapestry on the walls of life. The virtuous woman wore fine linen and purple. Fine linen that was imported from Egypt was bleached white and was highly prized. Purple was the colour of royalty and affluence. “Clothes aren’t going to change the world but the woman who wears them will” – Anne Klein. The virtuous woman teaches us to dress our mind and soul with purity and nobility.

Dressed in smart-casual linen and purple every day:

1.     Lenin: Dress-up your inner man in fine linen of purity every day. Clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). If there is true holiness there must also be false holiness. True holiness is inside out but false holiness is outside in. The physical should be subservient to the spiritual. The other way around is façade or fake holiness.  We kneel to physically demonstrate our reverence to the Lord. Hours of kneeling does not make us holy, it will only hurt our knees. Choose white linen of holiness to clothe your inner man.

2.     Loyalty: Loyalty is a mark of royalty. Choose the purple clothing of truth, reliability and fidelity. Exclusive extravagant purple clothing was the mark of honour for loyalty. ‘They clothed Daniel with purple and put a necklace of gold around his neck’ (Daniel 5:29). Dress up in royal attire of loyalty. Loyalty will always be honoured by royalty. “Dress how you want to be addressed”.

3.     Love: Love is the thread that holds our character together. Clothing comfort indicates physiological, psychological, and physical balance of a person. A well stitched and fitted dress gives immense satisfaction and clothing comfort. Likewise, love is the thread that runs through the clothing of linen and purple and gives us the best fit. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which ties everything together in unity (Colossians 3:14). Love is the fiber that runs through the fabric of purity and loyalty and gives us comfort and best fit. Dress-up in love.

Dress in smart-casual linen, purple and love every day.

Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, I choose fine white linen of holiness and the extravagant purple clothing of loyalty, seamlessly woven with the thread of love, to be my garment.  Amen
