21 December 2022 – Know Yourself – Part 4

Job 32:8 “But it is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding.

Who is the boss?  – Your soul or the spirit; your faith or feelings? A person who is led by the Spirit of God responds; he/she does not react to challenges and confrontations. But the soulish man reacts. God’s original plan for man was spirit, soul and body wherein the spirit of man, in unison with the Spirit of God, would instruct the soul and the soul would direct the body. God works from the inside out, not the outside in. After the fall of Adam and Eve, the soul (emotions, intellect & will) took charge. Mankind wanted to become like God and make his own decisions. He wanted to lean on his intellect rather than the incredible wisdom of God. The spirit of man was shrouded with sin. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour we welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts and give the control back into His hands. He comes and dwells in our innermost chamber, the spirit.

Just because we have accepted Jesus, our soul does not receive an instantaneous transformation. The soul is still adamant, angry and astringent.  The soul (emotions, intellect and will/desires) must be brought under the subjection of the Holy Spirit. We must give Him all the controls and learn to subjugate our soul to the dominion of the Holy Spirit. When we want to retaliate to an acidic comment on FaceBook, the Holy Spirit would ask us to bless them and not retort. We must subject our actions and reactions to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Learning to subject our soul/feelings to the leadership of the Holy Spirit who indwells in our heart/spirit floods us with spiritual discernment. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:11).

Who is the boss?

1.     Test: Check everything with the Holy Spirit. Test everything; hold fast what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).  Testing the waters by googling or talking to friends could be very deceptive. The most intelligent people of the world make the silliest mistakes in their relationships and financial dealings as they rely heavily on their intelligence.  Test everything with the Holy Spirit.

2.     Trick: Beware of the trickster.  “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion” (1 Peter 5:8). Be level-headed, spiritually sober and watchful about what gets deposited into your spirit. Many times the trickster insidiously slips in through the advice of a well-meaning friend or family member. Spirit of discernment will help us to decipher deception from divine directions.

3.     Tap: Tap into heavenly resources. We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will, with all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives (Colossians 1:9). The Holy Spirit imparts spiritual wisdom. Tap into the heavenly stream.

Let the Holy Spirit rule over your emotions, brain power and desires. Let Him be the boss.

Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the innermost parts of his being.

Prayer:  Dear Holy Spirit, I surrender my wants, my will and my smartness at your feet. You reign and rule over my soul. Amen
