Matthew 16:26 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Our soul is the channel of communication between the spirit and the body. The body senses through the sensory organs the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin. The sensory organs receive the stimuli and translate as feelings, intellect and will/desire through the soul to the spirit. The soul is our conscious and the spirit or the heart is our subconscious mind. The deposits from the soul into our subconscious mind, the heart, form our long term memories, habits and behaviour patterns. This is why Jesus wanted us to be selective about what we listen and meditate on. Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more (Luke 8:18). The deposits into the heart, through the soul, become the foundation of our character.
Those who indulge in perversion have a movie of porn playing in their subconscious-mind even when they are not consciously watching pornography. What we listen to and watch over and over again form layers of deposits in our heart. So, when Jesus comes into our heart, He would peel the veneer of the soulish deposits layer by layer. The soul is adamant and we have to consciously clean ourselves by washing our inner being with God’s Word. Accepting Jesus is instantaneous but transformation is a continuous conscious decision.
Soul is a very important component of our tri-part being. Healthy soul nurtures a healthy spirit. Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well (3 John 2). When the soul prospers we will flourish and thrive spiritually, physically, socially and emotionally.
Soul is the battlefield:
1. Senses: Sensory neurons are the nerve cells that are activated by sensory input from the environment around us. Listening to offensive music or watching vulgar movies will deposit violence, anger, insults, retaliation and rejection in our spirit. For out of the heart proceed wicked thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, impiety of speech (Matthew 15:19). Rude and boorish talk does not come from the tongue but from the heart. The body is the entry for both good and bad deposits in our spirit / heart.
2. Soul: The soul has the choice to either accept or reject the craving of the body. The body would want to sleep-in every day. The body would want to eat junk and entertainment all the time. But the soul which is your will and emotion has the right to say ‘no’. Right choice channels the right deposits into the spirit.
3. Spirit: The spirit is our subconscious mind that warns us when we slip away. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning (1 John 3:9). We will hear the voice of the Holy Spirit echoing in our heart to do what is right. Follow the Holy Spirit who whispers in your heart.
Beware of what you ruminate in your conscious-mind. The meditations of our conscious-mind(soul) form layers of deposits in our subconscious-mind (the spirit/heart).
