20 January 2023 – Fruitfulness – Part 6

James 3:17 The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Wisdom from heaven makes us fruitful.  “Wisdom is doing now what you are going to be happy later on.” – Joyce Meyer.  Wisdom is the right choice, right decision and the right use of knowledge. To be informed and well learnt with many degrees does not make us wise. Application of information is wisdom. Using the information that we have and applying it to define and shape our future is wisdom.  Divine wisdom makes us fruitful and flourishing. The choices and decisions are like seeds that we sow in a garden. We don’t reap the fruits as soon as the seed germinates. We would have to wait until the tree matures. Likewise, our choices to do what is right before God takes time to germinate grow and give rewards.

Jesus taught us divine wisdom with a practical lesson while He was on earth. During the last supper with His disciples, just a few hours before He was going to submit Himself to be arrested, accused and crucified, He wrapped Himself in a towel and washed the feet of His disciples. He had taught His disciples the sacrifice and investment that they have to make to become fruitful. Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35).  Back in Bible times, the slave who would be assigned the job of washing the feet was the lowest cadre. To be esteemed and valued in the eyes of God we must learn to humble and serve selflessly. Wisdom chooses humility over haughtiness and meekness over pride. Humility is an attitude not an action. We can do the right things for the wrong reasons but wisdom makes the right choice for the right reason. Good seeds planted in a fertile soil always yield much fruit.

Divine wisdom makes us fruitful:

1.     Right Choices: Choose wisdom. I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19). It requires humility to love unconditionally, forgive relentlessly and give generously. Making the right choices will not yield reward straight away but will make us fruitful and flourishing in the long run.

2.     Right Decisions: Decision is the firm action based on a well thought over choice. Both good and bad decisions are choices. Our decision to lose weight directs our diets and appetites. It dictates the course of actions for the choices that we have made. Decisions determine our fruitfulness.

3.     Right Actions: Choices and decisions that turn into actions are the fruit that we see in us. Divine wisdom makes us overflow with luscious fruits of godliness. Wisdom knows when to say ‘no’ and when to say ‘yes’. Many times an uncomfortable ‘no’ keeps us fruitful rather than a comfortable ‘yes’.

Divine wisdom makes us fruitful.

Matthew 7:18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

Prayer:  Father God, fill me with divine wisdom to make the right choices, decisions and make my actions fruitful. Amen
