13 April 2023 – Behind the Cross – Part 5

Hebrews 10:4 & 9 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second.

A divine transaction happened behind the cross. The old covenant was replaced with the new covenant. The old covenant was not repudiated but replaced as the new superseded old. “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law (Hebrews 10:8). No worldly sacrifice or suffering can remove the stain of sin. The animal sacrifices offered as sin/burnt offering only covered the sins but did not annul it. This is why David had to lose the first child with Bathsheba born out of wedlock. His sins were forgiven by the blood of the burnt offering yet there was retribution. There were stains of sin on the body of Moses in spite of the numerous blood sacrifices that he had offered. His disobedience at the rock of Horeb where he struck the rock instead of speaking to it was forgiven yet not forgotten. Hence the devil tried to claim his body when he died. But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses… (Jude vs 9).

Jesus put an end to the stain of sin by replacing the old covenant which required the blood of animals with His precious blood by becoming the unblemished Lamb of God. All animal blood has blemishes. Further scientifically, ‘Animal blood can contain harmful bacteria and pathogens that can cause food poisoning and pass on diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV’. Behind the cross, a new covenant was rewritten replacing the old covenant with the blood of Jesus. The cross put an end to animal sacrifices.

Behind the empty cross:

1.     Replace: Under the old covenant, the sins were washed away but the stains remained. But Jesus took the brunt of our blame under the new covenant and annulled retribution. The final summary of the life of David says, For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not failed to keep any of the LORD’s commands all the days of his life—except in the case of Uriah the Hittite (1 Kings 15:5). Not so, under the new covenant. Our past that is forgiven will never be remembered.

2.     Respiratory: The blood of Jesus sprinkled over us spiritually rejuvenates our soul and heals our body. In human blood, the respiratory pigment (hemoglobin) takes part in red blood cells whereas in animal blood respiratory pigment takes place outside the cells. The blood of Jesus is the hemoglobin of our soul. Under the new covenant we have a new life.

3.     Reproduce: The new covenant has qualified us as the blood brothers/sisters of Jesus. Under the old covenant we were servants/slaves, but under the new covenant we are sons/daughters.

Behind the cross, the new covenant was signed and sealed with the blood of Jesus.

Galatians 3:26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

Prayer: Victorious Jesus thank you for the new covenant that was written with your precious blood that has promoted me to be your son/daughter.  Amen.
