21 June 2023 – Wilderness – Part 4

Exodus 14:1-2 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon.

“God takes us into the wilderness not to abandon us…but to be alone with us” – T D Jakes.

Wilderness is a place of uncertainty. We don’t know what the future holds or what tomorrow is going to unfold. The Lord God was the GPS of Moses and the multitudes in the wilderness. He brought them out of Egypt and hemmed them in the wilderness between the Red Sea and the Pharaoh’s army. They were stuck between the rock and the hard place not because God had deserted them but because the Lord was their GPS.

God has not brought us to the wilderness of uncertainty to abandon us but to accentuate His name through us. I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord” (Exodus 14:4). It is certainly a very uncomfortable place but it is in the wilderness that the enemy who has pursued and persecuted us for years will be annihilated. The wilderness of a chronic health condition, stubborn wayward children, repeated financial challenges, redundancy, visa or marital issues is the place where God will boost our faith to crush the head of the pursuing monster of sickness, rebellion or lack. The parched ground will become a pool, the thirsty land springs of water (Isaiah 35:7). God will be glorified through us if we turn away from the chasing fearful force and turn our face towards the Deliverer.

God is glorified in the wilderness of uncertainty:

1.     Quiver: Uncertainty makes us quiver in fear. The Pharaoh pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly (vs 8b) but when the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord (vs 10). Our boldness will vanish into thin air when we read the diagnosis or listen to the current trend and news. When the fear of uncertainty grips our heart, we must learn to grasp the feet of Jesus and shelter under His wings.

2.     Question: Uncertainty makes us question God’s goodness. “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? (vs 11). The terrified Israelites asked silly questions to Moses. God has not brought us thus far to dump us in the wilderness of uncertainty. Never question God’s faithfulness.

3.     Quest: The wilderness of uncertainty is a quest to delve deeper into God’s majesty and plunge into His Word and His promises. The best and most precious lessons and revelations come out of the wilderness of uncertainty.

Wilderness is a place of rediscovering God’s majesty.

Exodus 14:14 “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, teach me to be calm, still and quiet in the wilderness of uncertainty to see your majesty and to crush the head and the devious plans of the enemy. Amen.
