10 July 2023 – Expectations – Part 2

1 Samuel 6:14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a priestly garment.

“Faith expects from God what is beyond all expectations” – Andrew Murray.

Statistics prove that the attention span of goldfish is longer than that of a human. The average human attention span is only 8.25 seconds but the attention span of a goldfish is 9 seconds. So, if you are wondering why you get so easily distracted during prayer, it is because our brains have to be deliberately and intentionally trained to focus. When we pray, praise or worship, it is vitally important to lay aside our concerns and cares and focus our heart to worship the King of Kings.

God’s desire for us is to have an undivided and undistracted heart. Amongst the various attributes of King David, he had an undivided heart towards God. He worshiped the Lord with all his heart, all his mind and all his strength. The first distinguishable achievement of David as soon as he became king over all of Israel was that he brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The Ark represented the presence of God. When the ark was brought into Jerusalem, the king put away his royalty and dressed himself in priestly garments to humble himself before the Lord. He clothed himself inside out in humility and servanthood and he danced before the Lord with all his might. The Lord God took pleasure in the adoration and acclamation of David but his wife despised him. The attack did not come from the boardroom but his bedroom. His wife Michal accosted and accused him with cheap, contemptuous, condescending criticisms. However, David was not disheartened by her derogatory defamation.

Our undivided worship to the Lord might be attacked by critics but will attract the attention of heaven.  Undivided attention, undistracted wholehearted worship and unwavering faithfulness meet God’s expectation.

God expects an undivided heart:

1.     Undivided: When David stood before the Lord, his powerful position, physical skills or strength was totally surrendered. David’s undivided attention on the Lord made him forget about the world around him. He just danced with all of his might with an undivided heart of worship and became the man after God’s own heart

2.     Undistracted: Stay away from all distractions. If we are checking our messages or doing ten other things like, cooking pasta, patting the cat and dusting the window during our time of prayer, our heart will be divided and mind will be distracted. The Lord God requires 100% total attention when we read His Word, pray or praise.

3.     Unswerving: David paid no attention to the people who were watching or the criticizers who were commenting. Those who seek the appreciation of people are distracted by the insecurity, fame and approval of people. Ignore comments, criticisms and concerns and turn all your attention on Jesus.

God’s expectation is for us to give him undivided attention, undistracted worship and unswerving adoration.

Psalm 86:11 Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, help me to focus and worship the Lord with an undivided heart. Remove the worldly worries and distraction and root me in unswerving faith. Amen.
