25 July 2023 – Lifecycle – Part 3

John 11:26 “And whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

The lifespan of a human is like that of a grass. As for man, his days are like grass; Like a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it and it is no more, And its place knows it no longer (Psalm 103:15-18). The active teenage, youthful adulthood, energetic middle-age and passionate old-age years will soon be gone and this world will remember us no more.  But Jesus said, those who believe in me will never die! Those who are born again do not die, but just shift locations from earth into eternity. Those who live with eternal perspective cannot be manipulated by emotional tantrums and tornados.

It is crucially important for us to live with eternal vision. The human lifecycle does not end on earth when we breathe our last breath. Life eternal begins when we exit this human body. All that we achieve, build and accumulate on earth will be left behind here. Only what we have deposited in heaven will be our wealth in eternity. It is not what we do but why we do it that turns into deposits in our heavenly bank account. When Jesus spoke about the final judgment to the righteous and the unrighteous, the righteous did not even know that they had a hefty superannuation fund accumulating interest in heaven.  Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? (Matthew 25:37). It is the purity of the heart, cleanliness of our hands and the cloak of humility that makes deposits of righteousness into eternity. Those who boast about their service and sacrifice on social media have received their reward on earth. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full” (Matthew 6:2).  The applause on earth will never be heard in heaven but the reward of our service in obscurity will be deposited in heaven.

Live with a heavenly perspective:

1.     Human: This body that we wash, groom and treasure is only a husk in which our soul lives. Soon the husk will be separated from the grain. The temporary does not attract attachment or sentiments. Likewise, everything that we see, feel, touch and possess is temporary. “Humus” is the Latin word for the earth or ground. So, we will leave the ‘humus’ on earth.

2.     Haven: Our haven is heaven. Our frail minds think that once we get a job, get married, buy a house, or settle the children we can retreat into our haven. No. Our haven is not on earth.

3.     Heaven: Heaven is going to be more exciting than our little human brains can imagine. It’s not going to be a boring place with harps and baby angels on clouds but will be bustling with surprises.

Live with eternal perspective. Our lifespan does not end on earth.

John 14:2 “I go to prepare a place for you”.

Prayer: Father God, help me to overcome the earthly attachments and embed eternity in my heart. Amen.
