14 August 2023 – Prompt or Provoke – Part 2

2 Samuel 6:16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.

Anything that we see, witness or hear can prompt us to worship or provoke us to despise, judge or comment. People analyzing and observing the same issue might have totally different views. One would appreciate what another wouldn’t. Our attitude towards life is a reflection of the perceptions of our heart. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you (Ephesians 1:18). If the eyes of our heart have filters, our views will be corrupt and cryptic. ‘Cataracts’ are formed in the eyes of our heart which makes our spiritual vision cloudy and hazy. There are different types of cataracts on the spiritual eyes: pride, envy, insecurity, fear, unforgiveness, bitterness and so on. These pollute the eyes of our heart and portray a distorted view of the situation or the circumstance. To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure (Titus 1:15).

David brought the ‘Ark of the Covenant’ into Jerusalem with much enthusiasm and celebration. To David this was the greatest day as the king of Israel but it was just another day for Michal. David considered it as the most significant ‘rubicon moment’ of his life but to his wife Michal it was just another carnival in the kingdom. David was bubbling with joy, adoration and gratitude but Michal was puffed with pride and pomp. “What you value, you worship.”

David’s spiritual eyes were washed with love and purity, but Michal’s were coated with conceit. Hence, she mocked David as soon as he finished the splendid worship service. The ‘Ark of the Covenant’ prompted David to dance, not just with his hips or hands, but with all his might; however, it provoked his wife Michal to demean and disparage him. Reactions, responses and reciprocations are the reflection of our heart.

Prompts or Provocations:

1.     Travesty: Mockery, travesty and contemptuous scorn comes from a soiled heart. Michal was irritated at the humility of David as she was parading in pride. Don’t try to correct the comments of such people, pray for the cataract in their spiritual eyes to be removed.

2.     Trigger: The triggers of anger, animosity and allegations are from a clouded heart. Ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings (Jude vs 8). If we don’t understand a person’s vision, commitment or worship, we have no right to comment or ridicule.

3.     Test: Test everything and let them only be prompts and not provocations. Test everything; hold fast what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

May the eyes of our heart be enlightened to see the glory of God in all circumstances.

Matthew 6:22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light”.

Prayer: King Jesus, remove any dirt or ‘spiritual cataract’ from my spiritual eyes so I may see your goodness and graciousness in everything.   Amen.
