13 September 2023 – Hindrances – Part 4

2 Kings 7:2 The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it!”

Our words can be the biggest barrier for our blessings. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits (Proverbs 18:21). Not all words have power but words that are spoken with faith ignite new beginnings and revive dead dreams. Faith is a powerful spiritual weapon. When the ammunition of faith and the fire of words meet they explode into a miracle! Our words become the spark that sets faith on fire. However, doubtful and distrustful words trigger death, destruction and damage. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell (James 3:6). Once we realize that the tongue is like the lighter that sets our faith or doubt on fire we will be cautious, candid and careful with our words.

Famine had impoverished Israel as the king of Aram had besieged their capital city. Elisha prophesied a 24 hour miracle for the hopeless nation but the commander-in-chief of Jehoram, the king of Israel, (the son of Ahab), could not believe the prophecy of the great prophet. His words of disbelief turned into his death sentence. The Lord opened the floodgates of heaven according to the words of Elisha, but the officer only saw it with his eyes but died in the stampede at the city gate! And that is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died (vs 20).

Our words can open the ‘floodgates of heaven’ or ‘the torrents of hell’. The words of this officer loosened the gates of hell. Every time we speak God’s Word in faith, the floodgates of heaven inundate our life with divine breakthroughs and blessings. Speak life and not death; increase and not decrease; progress and not distress.

Our own words can be our hindrances:

1.     Torrents: Treachery of hell is referred to as ‘torrents’ that are sent to destroy us however the torrents of hell cannot touch us unless we speak words of disbelief.

2.     Torments: Demons and unclean spirits of hell inject tormenting thoughts but they will have no power until we empower them with our own words. Those tormented by unclean spirits were made well (Luke 6:18).  When we speak dread and doubt we give them power to torture us. Kill negative thoughts with positive promises from the Word of God.

3.     Treasures: The treasures of heaven come flooding into our lives as we consistently and persistently speak the promises of God over our lives.

Our own words can open the floodgates of heaven or unleash the torrents of hell.

James 3:2b If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, may my tongue be an instrument of blessing and not a weapon of destruction. Amen.
