09 December 2023 – Mysteries of God – Part 7

Luke 1:34-35 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

The mysteries of God cannot be resolved with logical questions. “How”, “why” and “what” are brainteasers that develop with critical, logical and analytical thinking. However analytical thinkers are not ‘mystery busters’ who demystify the mysterious miracles of God. Facts and faith don’t go together. It is impossible to understand the ‘miracles’ with methodological thinking.

The Virgin Mary asked a rational question – “How will this be,”…“since I am a virgin?” Many critics have tried to find a scientific answer to this question and have discombobulated the truth. Parthenogenesis (PG) is an asexual reproduction in which a female can produce an embryo without fertilizing an egg with sperm. There are some jawed vertebrates such as whiptail lizards in which parthenogenesis has reproduced but it is unnatural for mammals. Further, this has never resulted in a viable pregnancy in humans; rather they result in ovarian tumors. Mary’s question was reasonable but she was willing to allow the promise and prophecy to overpower her questions, confusions and parenthesis. Mysteries of God exhibit His awesome power, overshadowing the weakness of man, resulting in miracles.

Mary was and will be the only virgin who will ever experience parthenogenesis. It was an onetime prophecy that came to pass – Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel (Isaiah 7:14). It takes the same amount of faith to believe that the universe was created with the Word of God and to believe in the virgin birth. This is why ‘the simple’ and ‘the humble’ experience miracles more than the intellectuals and educated.

God gave us rational thinking and intellectual abilities to uncover His marvelous creation. However, when the scientific analyses are used to authenticate the existence of God, man becomes a fool. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength (1 Corinthians 1:25). It requires childlike faith to fathom the mysteries and might of God.

Mysteries and miracles reveal God’s power:

1.     Parenthesis: Mysteries of God are not supported by parenthesis/explanations/commentaries but by the promises of God. Those who try to decipher the mighty works of God pretend to play god and when disappointed, turn their backs to Him.

2.     Parthenogenesis: The mystery of the virgin birth cannot be decoded by parthenogenesis. It can only be understood as the power of God overshadowing a humble subservient soul who was willing to trust and obey.

3.     Promises: The mysteries of God are only supported by God’s promises. Rational explanations of mysterious miracles are only found in the Word of God.

Logic will take us far away from God’s mysteries but childlike faith will make us a conduit of His miraculous power.

Luke 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, no human intelligence can fathom your wondrous works. Help my faith to be like a child to experience and become a channel of your mysterious miracles.  Amen.
