17 December 2023 – Talking Book – Part 1

2 Kings 22:11 When the king (Josiah) heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes.

The Bible is a talking book. Praying is us talking to God but reading the scriptures is God talking to us. The Bible is the most read and most printed book in the world. It is estimated that 5 billion copies have been printed in several hundreds of languages over its lifetime. Jesus said, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away (Matthew 24:35). The Bible contains 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents with no historical errors! The writers were only scribes of the Holy Scriptures written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is God’s audible voice; A Talking Book!

The Bible talks to us because the author is alive. It is not a recorded voice of the author who died centuries ago. The black and white prints in the Bible turn into His voice of inspiration, auction, correction or conviction as we read it.  The concept of audible books was developed mainly to educate the blind. The term “talking book” came into being in the 1930s with government programs designed for blind readers. Audio books became more popular in the 1970s when audio cassettes replaced phonograph records. Both metaphorically and literally the Bible can be nicknamed as “The Talking Book” as it opens the blinded spiritual heart with the light of God’s truth.

The Author of the book “Case for Christ”, Lee Strobel was a former atheist, journalist and a lead editor in The Chicago Tribune who had a radical conversion as he delved into the Bible to prove it wrong. However, he proved himself wrong as the book started talking to him; convicting and course correcting him. The talking book, the Bible converted him into an ardent follower of Christ.

The Bible is a Talking Book:

1.     Convicts: Reading God’s Word will enlighten the dark areas of our life and convict us. The Bible does not condemn us but convicts us. God’s word is His voice that will touch the spirit and transform the soul.

2.     Corrects: Reading God’s Word course corrects us. Reading of the book of law convicted King Josiah that he tore his robes! It’s not a book of ‘dos and don’ts’. It’s a book that accentuates life and death; sin and righteousness.

3.     Conducts: The Bible is our guide that gives directions and instructions. Every page reveals the mind of God to us and conducts our steps, stops and strides.

The Bible is the living audible talking book that talks to us even today. We will hear the voice of the author as we read it. Jesus is alive in every page of the Bible.

Psalm 119:103 Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Prayer: Dearest Holy Spirit, talk to me as I read your “Talking Book”. Teach, rebuke, correct, and train me in righteousness.  Amen.
