21 December 2023 – Talking Book – Part 5

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

The Talking Book awakens us to the goodness of God and activates the purpose God has in our lives. If we are not ignited with love and stirred with zeal to serve Him when we read the Bible, the Talking Book has not spoken to us. We have not made room and given time for God’s Word to speak into our spirit. The Bible is a transformational book. It renews our thoughts and reforms our actions. God’s Word, the Talking Book is described as a sharp double-edged sword. A sharp knife cuts better as the pressure in a sharp knife is inversely proportional as it has less area but a blunt knife has more area so there is less pressure. Surgical blades and instruments are very sharp so that the surgeon can make precise incisions and with minimal scarring to the patient. The Bible is a sharp double-edged sword meaning, it corrects but also comforts; it convicts but is also compassionate. It delineates the thoughts of the soul/flesh/emotions with the spirit. It deciphers the attitude of the mind and the heart.

Prayers and sermons that reverberate the Word of God become the double-edged sword that convicts, corrects and comforts both the listener and the speaker. The first sermon of Peter in Acts 2 after the resurrection of Christ Jesus was from Joel 2, Psalm 16 and Psalm 110 and 5,000 traditional, legalistic and conservative Jews were radically converted. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). The Talking Book penetrates into the soul and spirit and divides the intentions of the mind and heart. The Talking Book directs our decisions.

The Talking Book is a double-edged sword:

1.     Divides: The Talking Book divides the intentions with the ostentatious pretensions. God’s Word divides the pride from piety; boasting from boldness; envy from enthusiasm and judgemental attitude from justice. Many times what appears to be ‘passionate fervor’ might just be ‘fanatic legalism’. The Talking Book will divide the soulish thoughts from spirit filled inspiration.

2.     Delineates: The Talking Book delineates and draws a line in the sand with Godly standards. God’s Word delineates moral, ethical and social standards. God’s Word rules over ungodly and immoral laws. The government can legalize abortion, civil union or prostitution but it is the Talking Book that regulates the heart.

3.     Directs: The Talking Book directs the teacher and the disciple, the preacher and the congregation, the counselor and the listener. It is a double-edged sword. The sermon must direct the conduct and character of the teacher, preacher and counselor before it appeals to the recipients.

The Bible is the living audible talking book that talks to us even today. It divides the soul and the spirit, demarcates godly standards and directs our life.

Psalm 19:11 By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Prayer: Dearest Holy Spirit, talk to me and teach me to divide soulish thoughts from spirit filled inspirations. Amen.
