20 May 2024 – The Believer and the Beast – Part 1

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

From the creation of mankind until now, there is only one enemy who strives relentlessly to steal, kill and destroy us. The enemy is not the envious neighbour, hostile associate or the passive-aggressive colleague – It is the old serpent, the devil! The devil and his diabolical subordinates are normally referred to as evil spirits, ravaging beasts, powers of darkness or spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly realm. The devil is not afraid of palatial church buildings, huge congregations or revival conferences.  He is not intimidated by age-old antique steeples or by theologians and scholars who are seasoned in hermeneutics and interpretation of the scriptures but he trembles at a believer in Christ who knows the power of the name of Jesus.

The believer must know about the beast, the enemy, who constantly lurks and stalks to attack. At the Garden of Eden he crawled in like a slithering snake. Eve gave into the crafty sweet-talking serpent and Adam and Eve lost the threefold blessing that was generously and graciously given to mankind. Eventually, the threefold curse namely, spiritual death, physical death and financial debt infiltrated the world. They lost ‘dominion’ to the devil.

Jesus won the dominion that the first Adam lost on the cross and reversed the curses. Jesus retrieved the authority back and gave it into the hands of the believer.

The Believer’s Authority over the Beast:

1.         Spiritual: Sin severed our intimacy with the Lord. The Lord God could no longer go for a walk or hangout with Adam and Eve, after the great fall. But Jesus restored eternal life, intimacy and spiritual invigoration through His death on the cross. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die (John 11:25).

2.            Physical: Sin is the cause of sickness and degeneration in our physical bodies. Adam and Eve did not age until they sinned. After the fall their bodies began to disintegrate, wrinkles started to appear and their hair started to grey! Jesus through His death won over physical death. Those who are dead will receive a new transformed body when Jesus comes back as the King of Kings. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself (Philippians 3:20-21).

3.         Financial: Sin brought forth thorns and thistles which translate as debt and financial insufficiency.   By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground, from which you were taken (Genesis 3:19a). Jesus won over financial curse and paucity on the cross of Calvary.

The beast, the devil has powers but we have the authority to subdue him.

Matthew 28:18 Jesus came to them and said: ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth!

Prayer: King Jesus, teach me to walk in authority and trample over the beast and his brutality. Amen
