12 June 2024 – Discerning the Voice of God – Part 3

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

The primary way to hear the voice of God is through His Word. “When we pray, we talk to God; when we read, God talks to us.”  So ignoring the Word of God is refusing to listen to what He has to say. He will speak to us while we are reading or even in our silence the Holy Spirit will bring to our remembrance His Word that is stored in our hearts. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees (Psalm 119:10-13). Hence memorizing the Word is very important to hear His voice.

When Ezra the scribe read the Mosaic Law, the people who had gone astray and broken God’s Law were pricked in their heart and lamented. Hence, Nehemiah said, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law (Nehemiah 8:9b). As we read the Bible, a verse or phrase will leap out and convict us of our sins or direct us in the situation we are facing or His Word will instruct us to step forward or slow down or stop.

His Word is alive and the Holy Spirit will speak to us through His Word. Many still wrongly believe that casting lots to find out God’s will is permissible as the early apostles’ cast lots to replace Judas the Iscariot (Acts 1:26). This was before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Hence such practices are wrong and non-Biblical. Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to live in us and dwell with us. We have the Almighty God living within us to instruct, lead and guide. As we read, a verse will jump off the page and sync from the head into our heart to resonate in our spirit.

Discerning the Voice of God:

1.         Stir: God’s Word will stir our spirit to follow God’s direction. Like a fish that is thrown into the water, it will stir our heart.

2.         Sync: When His Word coaches, corrects or comforts we will never be able to forget the verse, place or situation. It will become a personalized promise verse to us and will sync deep down into our spirit. The finger of God will write it on the tablet of our heart.

3.         Still: God’s Word will bring stillness to the soul. His Word will put to rest our fears, apprehensions and inhibitions. Our raging emotions within us will become like still waters.

Invite the Holy Spirit before you open your Bible today and ask Him to talk to you through His Living Talking book.

Psalm 32:8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shall go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, teach me, coach me, guide me, correct me and lead me. I want to hear your voice and be led by your hand. Amen.
