31 August 2024 – Metabolism – Part 6

John 7:37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.”

A journal published by Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking 500ml of water, especially on an empty stomach, boosts metabolism by 30% within 10-40 minutes and also burns calories. Starting our day with a large glass of water not only rehydrates our body but also increases metabolism enhancing weight loss.

Jesus partook in the Festival of Tabernacles which was celebrated over a week to remember the provision and protection of the Lord during the years of wandering in the wilderness. On the last day of the celebration, which was also called ‘The Great Day’ the priests would carry the water from the pool of Siloam to the altar as a remembrance of ‘the water from the rock’ that refreshed their ancestors in the desert. While this ritual is performed by the priests, the people would sing ‘the Hallel’ (Psalms 113-118) praising the Lord for His providence and provision.

Jesus chose the most appropriate and poignant moment to call people to Him. “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” While they were praising God for the water that rehydrated them, Jesus gave them an open invitation to drink the living water that will revitalize their spirit. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water (vs 38). H2O is absorbed into our bloodstream and helps digestion, flushes toxins and promotes kidney function. Similarly, the Living Water from God’s presence, His Word and anointing refreshes our spiritual man and flushes out toxic thinking, talking and turpitude.

Living Water boosts Spiritual Metabolism:

1.         Flush: Drinking plenty of water enhances natural body detox. As water flushes out toxins from the body, drinking from the Living Word will flush out noxious anger, resentment, clamour, slander and bitterness. To make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word (Ephesians 5:26).

2.         Fresh: Dehydration decreases cognitive function while rehydration sharpens brain function. Similarly, the more time we spend with the Lord, the more refreshed and energized we will be. To increase our spiritual metabolism and alertness, spend time reading, ruminating and repeating the Word of God.

3.         Feed: Did you know dehydration can drive food cravings, especially for sweets? Drink a large glass of water to dilute the craving. Likewise, to dilute and flush out unhealthy cravings run to God’s presence and drink from Him. “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters” (Isaiah 55:1a). When you are tempted, don’t rush to the phone or to people but run to your prayer closet and drink from His presence. Feed sugar cravings with the glass of water and improve metabolism; feed the cravings of the soul with the Living Water to increase spiritual metabolism.

Water boosts metabolism and Living water enhances our spiritual metabolism.

Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.

Prayer: Jesus, My Living Water, I will run to you when I’m thirsty, weary, dehydrated by the scorching heat of the trials and temptations. A drink from your Living Word will make me refreshed and rejuvenated. Amen.
