19 October 2024 – Associations & Affinities – Part 6

Genesis 13:10 & 11b  Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)… The two men parted company:

The company we choose to be in would determine our growth or destruction. The territory we choose to dwell would protect our possessions or expose our inheritance to danger. Lot, the nephew of Abraham, disassociated himself with Abraham and associated himself to the luscious land of Sodom and Gomorrah, which was sinful and doomed for destruction. The grass is always green on the other side.

Lot’s wealth grew and multiplied because he was under the leadership of Abraham. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together (Genesis 13:6).The flocks and herds had increased manifold so that they could not share the same pasture land. So, the two multi-millionaires parted company. The glamour and the greenery of the cursed land of Sodom and Gomorrah attracted Lot. “All that glitters is not gold.” Lot pitched his tent near Sodom that was filled with promiscuity, perversion and profanity and soon the culture of the corrupt community crept into his territory. His family was deafened to the gentle voice of the Lord to move out of the perverted land. His wife was steeped into worldliness when they had to flee from the land her heart turned back at their humongous material possessions that they left back and she turned into a pillar of salt! The debauchery of the land that he lived in had perverted his daughters that they committed incest with their own father without any remorse.

Associations and Affinities will impact our inheritance:

1.         Green“From a distance, most things look beautiful.” Everything that looks attractive is not authentic. Be careful about your choices, companions and comrades. Bad company will corrode our character and our family values.

2.         Gorgeous: To the eyes of Lot, the land that he chose looked like the Garden of the Lord and the land of Egypt but the land full of sin and evil. The wickedness of the land penetrated into his home and destroyed his bloodline.

3.         Glamorous: Lot entered the glamorous land as a multi-millionaire but he fled from the land as an empty handed fugitive. Invest your time, affection, money and friendship in possessions that will last. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20). Don’t invest into glamorous gambles but look for genuine ventures and relationships.

Associations and affinities must be in genuine friendships based on fundamental and foundational truth. Bad company, wrong associations and corrupt affinities are dangerous and destructive.

Genesis 13:12b-13 Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, if my eyes turn towards the green, gorgeous and glamorous things of the world, do whatever it takes to correct my ways and turn my trajectory back to you. Amen.
