1 Samuel 2:8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and on them he has set the world.
Gravity is the force that holds earth in its orbit around the sun and keeps our feet on the ground. The greater the mass, the greater the gravitational pull. Although scientifically we understand that gravity holds the earth together, scripturally and spiritually we know that it is the Lord Almighty who holds the earth in its place. If the earth moves closer to the sun, humans will burn to death and if it moves further away from the sun we will freeze. It is the Creator who holds the galaxies together in His hands. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).
The scriptural and spiritual pillars indicate our substratum, security and strength. Faith is the gravity that keeps us firmly fixed to the spiritual pillars. To affirm the covenant that the Lord made with Israel, Moses set up twelve pillars. Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 24:4). The pillars are a solemn reminder of our covenant and the commandments of the Lord.
Some have pillars of career as their pillar of security. Others have their bank balance as the pillar of surety and others lean on people as their pillar of safety, however, all of these carnal pillars will fail. Career achievements will soon retire, banks can go bankrupt and people will disappear or betray. Only the pillar of God’s love, truth, His righteousness and justice will stand forever. The wife of Lot was tied to the enormous wealth and the luxurious lifestyle of Sodom and Gomorrah. She could not leave behind the wealth hence she looked back and became a pillar of salt. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). Her security became her sepulchre.
Spiritual and Scriptural Pillars:
1. Security: Jesus is the only unshakable security. Those who put their jobs, career, business, money and shares are like Lot’s wife. The very thing that they put their security in will become their sepulchre.
2. Strength: Jesus is the strength to the weak, He is the wisdom to the simple and He is the muscle of might. He is the God who will turn the “I can’t” into “I can do all things through Christ Jesus”.
3. Substratum: Jesus is the substratum of our soul. He is the only firm foundation on which we can build our fruitful and influential life. All other foundations are loose grounds.
Jesus is the only pillar who will never fail, never falter and never give up on us.
Psalm 75:3 says, “When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm.”
Prayer: Father in Heaven, you are my only unfailing pillar that I lean on. Forgive me for making my career, wealth or achievement my confidence. Amen.
