2 Kings 19:35 That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp.
“Picture speaks a thousand words”.
The King of Assyria, King Sennacherib had camped in the outskirts of Jerusalem and sent a threatening letter to King Hezekiah, the King of Judah. Hezekiah took the menacing letter and went into the temple and spread it before the Lord. The Lord God of Israel who guards over Jerusalem answered his plea in a dramatic way. That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! (2 Kings 19:35). Sennacherib woke up the next morning to see his violent warriors as dead corpses! He would have been bewildered and baffled by the mysterious death of his fierce army and would have performed a mass burial of 185,000 sleeping soldiers. One angel in his might and power walked into each tent and trusted his sword on the head and neck of the 185,000 combatants! Not a single one escaped.
This is not the first time we see the power of the mighty angels. God sent an angel to annihilate the first born of Egypt the night before He delivered them from the tyranny of the Pharaoh (Exodus 12:12-23). The same God will send His angel to defend and obliterate the enemies who rise up against you and me.
Illustrative Bible fortifies our faith:
1. Fight: The size, strength or the influence of the enemy need not intimidate us. The Lord God does not need a huge army to overthrow a powerful enemy. One of His mighty angels will finish the job! God will fight for us.
2. Fortify: The illustrative Bible will heighten our trust and confidence. The same God who saved His chosen people will save you and me, His precious people.
3. Faith: A dramatic illustration will demonstrate God’s power in a dynamic way. When fear creeps in, recollect a portrait of an illustrative Bible portion and boost your faith.
The Illustrative Bible builds our faith and breaks the yoke of fear.
Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, teach me to create picture memories of your awesome power and mighty that I may never be fearful of the evil one. Amen.
