09 April 2025 – The Royal Priesthood – Part 1

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The priests were not ordinary insignificant ministers in the Bible. They were both religious and political leaders. They were authoritative and powerful and were educated in the Law of the Lord. They were Leaders and Guides to the common uneducated peasants.

The first priests and the only family line that could serve the Lord in the Holy sanctuary was Aaron and his sons. Aaron, the brother of Moses was chosenclothed with sacred garments and called to minister as priests to the Lord. However, we, the New Testament believers are chosen and are called “The Royal Priesthood”. Hence, it is important to know who priests are, their rights, privileges, duties and the purpose of this holy office.

Priests were those who knew the law and who taught the law of the Lord. They were ministers to the Lord in the tabernacle and the temple. Only the priests were allowed to enter the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. They were the intercessors for the people. They offered sacrifices and performed duties such as healing the sick, deliverance, fending to the needy, bringing justice and other duties such as trimming the lamps, refuelling the lamps with oil, replacing the bread on the Table of Showbread and burning incense.

You and I are the New Testament Royal Priest:

1.         Chosen: We are chosen to serve the Lord as priests. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so they may serve me as priests (Exodus 28:4b).

2.         Called: Through the cross of Calvary, the body of Jesus was torn, and He opened the door for those who accept Him to become His priests. We are called His Royal Priesthood.

3.         Clothed: Aaron and his children were clothed with consecrated garments to be distinguished as priests. Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor (Exodus 28:2). Put on the garment of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience and distinguish yourself.
