Judges 6:12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
Neuroscience backs the theory of the impact of ‘positive affirmation’ on the overall emotional health of a person. Scripture and science do not contradict each other. Science confirms the scriptures if they are accurately delineated. The brain and the soul that is damaged by negative comments and childhood trauma can be rewired and renewed by positive affirmation based on the Word of God.
We are not what our caretakers, teachers or cynical relatives called us. We should not allow the circumstances or criticism to define our identity. We are who the scriptures say we are. We are not ‘timid’, ‘dull-headed’, ‘hot-tempered’ or any other label that was given to us as a child or as an adult. We are God’s chosen, anointed and powerful child of God. Our vision is many times narrowed by the words we have heard in the past. Our vision about ourselves unconsciously shapes our identity. If we see ourselves as grasshoppers, we will allow people to walk all over us. If we see ourselves as giants we will trample over snakes and scorpions.
Gideon was living in a warzone where they were constantly defeated and ransacked by the enemies. The environment he grew up in made him a coward. The Lord had to change his identity before he could entrust the mission of overthrowing the enemies. The angel of the Lord, called the man who was hiding in a winepress to thresh his wheat in fear of the raiders, as a “mighty warrior”. The words of the angel reignited courage in a coward.
Affirm Your Identity:
1. Discern: Don’t accept all the thoughts that run through your mind. Discern and decipher the voice of the Holy Spirit. Replace the negative words with positive affirmations.
2. Demean: The noise in our head that demeans us is the rattling of demons. Rebuke the negative and pessimistic thoughts and words.
3. Declare: Declare the Word of God over yourself. “You are chosen, called and courageous. You are God’s precious possession”. Our words shape our identity.
Declare your identity in Christ everyday to defeat the demeaning noise of the demons.
Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, change my vision with your promises and prophecies. Help me to shape my identity with your Word. Amen.
