John 4:28-29 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
“Abandoned Jar”
In ancient times when running water was a luxury; women would go to the wells to draw water for daily use. In the hot Middle East they would probably make several trips during the early hours of the day to draw water. However, we find a woman going alone to the well at noon. She was not part of the water girl’s huddle because of her past baggage. She had been divorced five times and was living with a man outside wedlock. Jesus engaged in a conversation with this rejected and ostracized woman. One encounter with Jesus opened her spiritual eyes. The joy of salvation overwhelmed her with ecstasy that she forgot the purpose of her trip in the hottest hour of the day, left her water jar at the well, and ran into the town to propagate Jesus.
One encounter with Jesus will make us abandon our selfish goals in life. Personal aspirations, ambitions and visions are good only when they align with God’s plan and purpose for our lives. There are times when we must surrender our goal to accomplish God’s will. Abandoning our plan to embrace the godly purpose will make our abandoned jar into a chosen anointed vessel. The ostracized woman became the first female evangelist as she surrendered her desires, wants and needs at the feet of Jesus.
“The abandoned jar became the anointed vessel”.
The Abandoned Jar:
- Abandon: If your personal ambition is hindering the plan of God, abandon it at the feet of Jesus. Those who surrender their aspirations to become “famous/wealthy/accomplished” and choose to run the faith-race and make “Jesus famous” become God’s precious vessels.
- Align: If our personal aspiration does not align with God’s vision, we will satisfy our ego but there will be an unfulfilled emptiness within us. Align with God’s purpose.
- Accept: The ostracized woman who abandoned her water jar at the well to evangelize about Jesus was accepted by the same village that had rejected her for years.
“An abandoned/surrendered life will be anointed”.
Prayer: Dearest Jesus, I surrender my plans and thoughts. Fill me with your anointing to fulfill your purpose. Amen.
