Exodus 16:2-3 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
There are various furnace experiences that refine our spiritual life. One such testing ground is on money, finances and provisions. Unexpected financial strain or a pressing need has a shrieking and a tormenting voice that is accompanied by fear about the future. The test is yet another opportunity to taste and see that the Lord is good. He is our Provider and the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
The redeemed slaves from Egypt had just crossed the Red Sea and witnessed their tyrant enemy and his armies drown under the sea. It was about 30 days since they left Egypt. The exodus journey began on the 15th day of the first month (Numbers 33:3), and they arrived in the Desert of Sin on the 15th day of the second month. In a month, the Lord had done mighty miracles before their eyes yet, the complaining horde was very quick to forget the goodness of the Lord. They allowed the rumbling stomachs and thirsty throat to throttle their faith and lamented that they should have died as bond slaves in Egypt, eating the food of oppression.
When you are in a tight corner and the fear about lack of finances/provisions taunt you, ask the question – “Who said so”? Declare boldly “The Lord is my Provider and I will never be in want”.
Taste God’s goodness in the test:
- Talk: Talk to your soul and reaffirm your faith. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him” (Lamentations 3:24).
- Test: The financial furnace is a test of trust. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions (vs 4b).
- Taste: The trial is a ‘test of your tenacity’. Taste and see that the Lord is good.
When fear about finances or your future torment you, ask the question – “Who said so”
Prayer: Lord of Heaven and Earth, help me to trust, rest and taste your goodness in every need. Amen
