26 February 2026 – The Heart – Part 1

Acts 13:22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’.

The heart of David attracted the attention of the Lord as the thoughts of David’s heart aligned with the thoughts of God. The Lord God Himself testified concerning David that David was a man who was deeply devoted and aligned to God’s heart. David’s desires, motives and actions were consistently in line with God’s will, plans and purpose. He did not pray, “Lord grant me my desires”, instead he said, “I desire to do your will, my God” (Psalm 40:8).

“The spiritual heart” that the Bible refers to is not the organ of the body; it is our innermost being where faith resides. It refers to our ‘spirit being’. We are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body. We can only see the body and the outward reactions but God sees our inner being and our intentions.

The “thoughts of our mind” are reactionary based on logical and intellectual analysis but “the thoughts of our heart” are responsive based on our core values, belief systems and the truth. Our spiritual heart is the residence of our faith. There is no faith in the mind. This is why we can never explain or comprehend faith by intellectual deliberations. The Lord looks at the heart.

God was impressed with the thoughts of David’s heart. David was sensitive to the ways, will and the Word of God. David refused to harm King Saul who hunted for his life (2 Samuel 24:6). David was quick to repent when he sinned against Lord and took Uriah’s wife (2 Samuel 12:7). David had a heart to build a temple for the Lord. He was passionate about God’s eternal kingdom more than the worldly empire that he ruled. Hence, David captured the heart of God.

The Thoughts of the Heart:

  1. Humble: David was humble as he trembled at God’s Word (Isaiah 66:2).
  2. Haughty: Power, position and the palace did not make David haughty hence, God was gracious to Him (James 4:6).
  3. Hasten: David wasted no time but hastened to fulfill God’s command.

The Lord judges the thoughts of our heart.

Prayer: Father, create in me a clean, humble and contrite heart. Amen.
