Psalm 16:8-9 I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.
The secret of a “glad heart” is a renewed mind. Renewing our mind is the process of refocusing our attention on our Creator, Maker and Saviour – everyday. The spirit of a man is referred to as our heart. Our spirit/heart that is trapped inside our body is fed through the soul/mind. The mind is the feeding-tube to the heart. The heart is nourished or impoverished by the thoughts our mind feeds on. If we feed on junk, then the heart will be clogged with fat. “Healthy diet, healthy heart”.
Refocusing our mind from apprehensions, anxiety or animosity by reading, ruminating and repeating God’s Word renews our heart. A renewed mind focuses on the promise and not the problem, hence is not easily saddened, struck by the trauma or the fear of the future. The focus of a renewed mind is fixated on the Lord.
Psalm 16 is called the “golden psalm” or “Miktam” in Hebrew as it contains precious secrets of the Messianic prophecy. David wrote this psalm during his perilous flight from King Saul. Even in the intense danger of a devouring army hunting for him, David was able to boldly declare that his heart is glad, his tongue rejoices and his body rests secure because he had set the Lord before him. David didn’t lose sight of the incomparably all-surpassing power of God even when he was persecuted. David was not stressed but he rested and trusted that the Lord Almighty is mightier than the lethal bloodthirsty king.
A Glad Heart:
- Feed: Our eye-gate, ear-gate and mind-gate must feed on God’s incredibly great power, might and potent to remain glad, satisfied and satiated. CNN, Fox News or BBC can only give us information. Don’t munch and mull over the disturbing information but meditate on God’s Word.
- Focus: Focus on God’s Word, not the words, comments or threats of man.
- Fixate: Have your eyes fixated on the Lord.
Soul is the feeding-tube to the spirit. A well-fed spirit is glad.
Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, I will renew my mind by feeding on your word and set you before me 24/7. Amen.
