Deuteronomy 10:2 “I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.”
The Ten Commandments were written by the finger of God. Moses broke the first set of tablets that the Lord wrote with His own fingers at the foot of the mountain when he saw the people dancing and reveling around the golden calf. But the Lord re-wrote the commandments again with His own fingers. The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke (Exodus 34:1).
The incident is not just a record of the rebellion of the Hebrew slaves but a typology of the rebellion of mankind. The graciousness of the Lord re-writes His laws and our history every time we miss the mark and break His commandments. Furthermore, the Lord in His grace has promised to put His laws in our hearts and write them on our minds. This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds (Hebrews 10:16). The new covenant is more superior than the old, as the old was on stone tablets stored away in the Ark of the Covenant but the new covenant is stored in our hearts and written on our mind.
In any covenant both parties agree to abide and act on the covenant rules. Similarly, for the new covenant to come to pass we must abide by the covenant rules.
The finger of God writes His law in our mind:
- Chisel: Chisel the stone tablets. Make room for the Lord. Set a time aside to sit at His feet to seek him and to feed on His Word.
- Cleanse: God will not write on a dirty slate! Cleanse your heart and mind.
- Climb: The Lord can put His law in our hearts and write them on the tablet of our mind only when we climb up the prayer mountain and wait at His feet.
The finger of God writes His laws in our mind.
Prayer: Gracious Lord, I will make room for you to write your precious law on the tablet of my mind. Amen.
