20 March 2026 – Why David? – Part 2

Acts 13:22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

David was ‘God’s go-to man’ – “A man after God’s own heart”. Another attribute that attracted the attention of heaven towards David was his love for God’s word. Reading, ruminating and repeating God’s Word were not a chore to him. He delighted greatly in God’s commandments and kept them. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word (Psalm 119:16). Reading the Bible was like reading his favorite novel. It was pleasurable and leisurable to David. It was his passion. My passion and delight is in your word, for I love what you say to me! (Psalm 119:47 TPT).

It is the obligation for a Jewish boy to read and learn the Torah from the age of 6. Around the age of 13 years, they should be well equipped to read the Torah in public. So, in the household of Jesse with eight children, there would have been scripture lessons. There was one kid who stood out in his passion and hunger to know, understand and feed on God’s Word. He was like the child on the first row of the class who always had questions. Other students would have disliked him for his enthusiasm and the favour that he got from the tutors. That child was David!

David then carried these scriptures in his heart into the wilderness and while he was tending his father’s flock, he tuned them into songs and psalms.

Those who love God’s Word and take great delight in His commandments become God’s favorites and go-to man/woman. Delighting is not just knowing but endeavoring to live by it. Obedience to God’s Word with the right attitude is the ultimate expression of love. “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

Become God’s “Go-to man/woman”:

  1. Passion: Read the Bible passionately to learn, understand and live by it.
  2. Pleasure: Take pleasure in reading and ruminating on God’s Word.
  3. Priority: Prioritize God’s Word above all else. It enlightens our soul with comfort, direction and confidence.

Greatly delight in God’s Word to become God’s go-to man/woman.

Prayer: Holy Father, I delight in your holy Word. It is my passion, pleasure and priority.  Amen.
