12 October 2020 – Pick Your Battles – Part 7

1 Samuel 17:24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man (Goliath), they all fled from him in great fear.

The champion of the Philistines, Goliath the giant, was about 2.06 meters tall, came and stood before the army of the Israelites with his bronze helmet and wearing a coat of bronze armour weighing 42 kgs. The spear head weighed 6 to 7 kgs! His appearance, armour and announcements intimidated the mighty warriors of the Israelites army to curl up in fear. They fled in fear when the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other” (1 Samuel 17:10).  For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand (1 Samuel 17:16).

The uncircumcised Philistine in the old testament is the typology to the lying, deceiving and intimidating demons that threaten, frightened and bully us. When we see that challenge that is too big to handle, when the prognosis is life threatening, when the enemy’s menacing voice is echoing day in and day out in our ears; when nightmares and daymares constantly provoke us to fear, doubt and fret, we must strengthen ourselves in the Lord and stand up against the defying deceiver. Overpower the demeaning thoughts of doubt and defeat by speaking out the Word of God loud and clear. When you feel like hiding in a cave or flying to ends of the earth away from the challenge, speak words of victory, success and triumph – “Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4)”.

Three simple steps to silence and strangle the voice of the tormentor, torturer and tempter the devil:

1.     Defy: Every time you hear a voice yelling, “you can’t” or “you won’t” , defy the demonic lying voice and confront it with the promise, I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (Philippines 4:13). Silence the negative, pessimistic and depressing voices. There is no challenge that is too big for our God. All wisdom, wealth and wellbeing flows from Him. Do not open the door of fear but defy the lies, deception and trickery of the devil with God’s Word. James 4:7 Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

2.     Demolish: The enemy is relentless. Goliath defied the armies of the living God morning and evening for 40 days. The demonic demeaning spirits will antagonise you with your past failures, mistakes and limitations. This is when we must  refocus from our ability to His ability; our strength to His strength and our wisdom to His wisdom. 2 Corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Do not entertain futile, fearful and shameful thoughts.

3.     Defeat: We have been called for victory not defeat. Have you faced failure in the past? Were you defeated, rejected or inflicted with pain and shame? 2 Corinthians 2:14a But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession. Change your defeat into victory by changing the way to think, the way you look at yourself and your reaction to the intimidating, demeaning and demeaning demonic voices. We are more than conquerors; we are winners and we are champions through Christ who conquered all our challenges on the cross .

Don’t curl, cringe or coil when you hear the threatening, freighting and demeaning lying demonic voices. Stand up as David did and overcome the giant! With Christ all things are possible.

1 Samuel 17:46a This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head.
