21 October 2020 – The Exchange – Part 6

Genesis 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

Curse is the consequence of repeated transgressions. A default  becomes an iniquity when there is reoccurrence but no repentance, penitence or reconciliation. Like blessings, curses are also a transferable commodity passed on from one generation to the other. Inheritance is received through a legal document whereas curse is passed on through bloodline or intimacy. 1 Corinthians 6:16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? So, it is possible to receive generational curses even without enjoying any of the generational wealth. Thorns and thistles started growing in this world after the senseless, sinful fall of man. Adam and Eve had no prickles in the Garden of Eden. Hence, Jesus exchanged our curses with blessings on the cross and paid for it with a crown of thorns.

Curses prick, puncture and tear like thorns. Anyone who comes under the blood covenant of Jesus will be set free from curses when they commit to walk in obedience. Ruth, the Moabite came from a family line of incest, perversion and travesty however, when she walked under the umbrella of grace, she was set free. Zacchaeus the corrupt crook was set free from the curse of bribery and corruption when he invited Jesus under the umbrella of his home.  The Samaritan woman was set free from the curse of immorality when she walked under the shadow of Christ and started drawing from the well of the ‘Living waters’.

The cause of cures could be our own sin like Zacchaeus; could be a result of weakness like the Samaritan Woman or could be generously passed though our heritage.

Three common causes of curses:

1.     Bribery: Exodus 23:8 “Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent. When money and material block the view to justice and truth, it becomes a curse. The eyes of the heart is blinded with bribery. People who take bride lose their vision of the wellbeing of their future generation. Wealth accumulated by bribery becomes  curse instead of a blessing.

2.     Sorcery: Exodus 22:18 Death is the punishment for witchcraft. God hates sorcery, superstition and  spirit mediums. Leviticus 19:31 “‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. Consulting familiar spirits, sorting to sorcery and following superstition are the causes of spiritual blindness. Any kind of occult practices, astrology, numerology, seeking divination are detestable to the Lord and opens the door to the cruelty of curses.

3.     Infidelity: Idolatry, impurity and infidelity will open the door to generational curses. Deuteronomy 27:15 Cursed the man that makes any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD. Objects of charms, crystal balls and good luck will only bring curse not blessings into our homes. Deuteronomy 27:17 & 19 Cursed [be] he that removes his neighbour’s landmark. Cursed [be] he that perverts the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. The Lord God has very little tolerance to idolatry and injustice. Isaiah 61:8 For I the Lord love justice; I hate robbery and injustice.

The cure to curse is the cross. The antidote to addiction and adultery is the blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has paid the debt of sin and curse “in full” by shedding His innocent blood on the cross. He became a curse in our place. The cause of the curse could be our own sin or the sins of our forefathers. When we fast, repent and return back to Christ, He will be faithful to exchange our curses with His blessings.

Jeremiah 48:10 “Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord with slackness”.
