10 Nov 2020 – Burdens – Part 4

Psalms 51:3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

Unlike the burden of stress that is heavy behind us, the burden of sin lies before us and causes us to stumble. Genesis 4:7 “If you had done the right thing, you would be smiling; but because you have done evil, sin is crouching at your door. It wants to rule you, but you must overcome it.” Sin is the blockage that causes us to stumble and transgression (repeated sin), causes us to be stuck in a stronghold of wrongdoings. King David’s confession from his wilful sin, innate weakness and wrongdoings teaches us life lessons to break through the barricades of sin and live a life of freedom.

A sinful lifestyle distances us from the presence of God. God does not distance Himself from us, but we are distanced from Him. He never leaves us nor forsakes us, but we stop hearing and sensing His presence. Our spiritual eyes and ears are blinded and blocked by sin. Proverbs 15:8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him. The petitions of a sinner are abominations before the Lord. The punishment to the wicked does not come immediately, as the Lord is gracious, compassionate and slow to anger; hence they continue to sin. Assuredly, the evil man will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be delivered (Proverbs 11:21). When King David was reprimanded for his sins by Prophet Nathan, he removed the crown and classy Kingly garment and humbled himself before the celestial throne of God.

Three cautions to remove the burden of sin from our lives:

1.     Weakness: Weakness causes us to sin and stumble. When weakness is the cause of sin, we will lose our joy and are battered by the weight of the sin. Psalms 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.  Regret will not restore us, only repentance will restore the joy and replace our weakness with willingness and toughness to overcome the sin.

2.     Wilful sins: Headstrong stubborn and stiff-necked sinners will become self-righteous and pompous. Arrogance and haughtiness will not condone the sin; wilful sinners will be condemned. Wilful sin cannot be camouflaged, covered or concealed. Numbers 32:23b you may be sure that your sin will find you out.  The wickedness and the nastiness of the evil doers does not give us the licence to retaliate. Jesus said, love those who hate you and pray for those who persecute you. He did this to destroy the vicious circle of sin and curse.

3.     Wrongdoings: Repeated sins or transgressions will result in the consequence of generational curses that will stain the path for us and our generations to come. Proverbs 3:33a The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked. Hardening of heart after repeated reproach will turn the stones and stumbling sins into thorns and thistles along our trail. Curses are like poisonous thorns that will prick, puncture, pierce the progress in the pathway of life.  Jesus took all our curses to the cross of Calvary. Only the cross can cancel the consequence of the curses on our life.

The  burden of sin will barricade our progress and block the momentum of our success. Only the blood of Jesus can set us free from guild, shame, condemnation, sin and curse. 1 John 1:7b the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Psalms 51:14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Saviour.
