2 Samuel 6: 17& 19 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.
The ark of the covenant is a box that was built by Moses and his team of architects in the wilderness. It contained the Mosaic law that Moses received from the Lord at Mount Zion. Hebrews 9:4 This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. The ark of the Lord was captured by the Philistines when Israel lost to them in battle during the time when Eli was the high priest. After almost 4 decades King David brought the ark back into Jerusalem. David had an ecstatic celebration of the return of the ark of the Lord with sacrifices, singing and dancing. After the jubilant worship in the kingdom, the King blessed all the people and served them a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins before he sent them home. The celebration of the arrival of the ark of the Lord concluded in a covenant meal with dates and raisins which was fat free, cholesterol free, vitamin rich, loaded with antioxidants and was an excellent source of fibre.
The Ark of the Lord figuratively represents the presence of the Lord in our lives and communion is the covenant meal that categorically confirms the power of His presence in us. King David did not serve a lavish banquet, he served them a vitamin and antioxidant rich covenant meal. Similarly communion is like a booster dose to our spiritual life. Communion builds our immunity to make us confident, courageous and audacious.
Communion, covenant meal is the spiritual vitamin booster dose:
1. Antiviral: Communion, is the spiritual antiviral that protects us from the virus that corrupts our mind and confuses our thoughts. As antiviral prevents viral infection, communion protects our heart and mind from being infected and afflicted with doubt, distrust and disbelief. Communion boosts spiritual antibodies called ‘faith’ to fight against the virus of fear, anxiety and anger. We cannot and should not take communion harbouring unforgiveness or bitterness. Communion is the antiviral that heals us from the viral infections of the soul.
2. Antidote: Communion is the antidote for physical and spiritual illness. Sorrow, suspicion or scepticism; hurt, rejection or pain, depression, seclusion and dejection cannot be treated medically with antidepressants. It might drug and give us temporary relief but the antidote to grief are the elements of communion; the wine that represents the blood of Jesus and the bread that represents His Word. Communion is the source of spiritual strength, the divine medication and antidote to the desperation of our soul. .
3. Antioxidant: Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in our body. Free radicals are compounds that can cause harm when their levels become too high in our body. As iron rich resins and antioxidant rich dates builds and boosts our physical immunity, the communion table builds our spiritual immunity. No battle will make us weary, no news will shake our faith and no challenge will overwhelm or exhaust us when we regularly and piously participate in the communion table.
Communion is the antiviral that fights infection, antidote that heals the heart and antioxidant that builds our immunity to strive effortlessly against the challenges of life. The one who partakes in the communion table devoutly will be spiritually and physically healthy.
1 Samuel 30: 12 They gave him a piece of fig cake and two clusters of raisins, and he ate; then his spirit revived.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for the antiviral, antidote and antioxidant that is inbuilt in the elements of communion. Every time we partake in the communion, help us to receive divine physical, spiritual and emotional healing. Amen
