Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Our tongue has creative or destructive power. This is not a fancy positive thinking, “name it and claim it” religious cliché. Our thoughts, meditation and judgements of our mind are accumulated as deposits in our heart. Our heart is like a bank account. The mind makes the deposit, the heart holds it and the tongue withdraws by speaking it. Our words are only withdrawals from what is deposited into our heart through the meditation of our mind. If we meditate on the problem over and over again, we will make deposits of fear in our heart, whereas if we meditate on the promises cancelling the predicament, we will make deposits of faith. Our tongue only reveals what our heart is full of. Hence, death and life is in the power of our tongue.
We can withdraw only from a healthy and fatty bank account. If we fail to make the right deposits of clean thinking, unsoiled meditation and unselfish intensions, our bank account will be empty. Proverbs 12:5 The thoughts of the righteous are just. Cheques issued from an empty overdraft account will bounce similarly, the flowery words from a deceitful heart will fail. The power of words depends on the strength of the deposits that we have accumulated.
The tongue makes withdraws from the deposits in the heart:
1. Deposits: Every time we memorise the promises of God, when we meditate on His greatness, omnipotence and supremacy; when we choose godliness, kindness, patience, gentleness, purity and self-control we make healthy deposits into the bank account of our heart. Detrimental deposits of hatred, jealousy and pride cannot be concealed by sycophancy, fawning or flattery words. Those who apply the logic but fail to live by the principle will be issuing bad blank cheque and empty words which will bounce back. Make calculative wise deposits into your heart.
2. Investments: Words are like investment that we make. When we speak words of faith over a wayward teenager, the child will be drawn back into the path of righteousness. However, if we speak words of frustrations, curses and hopelessness we will sabotage the plan of God over their lives. Words must be not controlled by feelings but must be rooted in the faithfulness of God, even in bleak circumstances. Make short term, medium and long term investments over your future and you will eat the fruit of your words. Berries can be harvested in a year but an apple tree takes 8 to 10 years to bear fruit. Invest into your future with your words.
3. Withdrawals: Keep a guard over your mouth when you are emotionally instable, upset or angry. James 1:26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. Don’t rush to give an answer or reply to an email. Take a break, have a glass of water, go out for a walk and process the words before you respond. Make wise and calculative withdrawals. Once words are spilled it cannot be taken back.
A tamed tongue makes productive withdrawals from the lucrative investments stored in the heart. Deposit carefully and withdraw wisely to live a healthy, content and rewarding life.
Proverbs 23:9 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I commit to fill my heart with wise deposits to make meaningful withdrawals and profitable investments into my life and the lives of those around me. Amen
