20 Feb 2021 – Foothold – Part 2

Ephesians 4:27 And do not give the devil an opportunity [to lead you into sin by holding a grudge, or nurturing anger, or harbouring resentment, or cultivating bitterness]. (AMP)

Thoughts, imaginations and arguments that we entertain can cause a crack and give the devil a foothold to inject malign into our mind.  These are called “thought bombs”. The deceiver persistently shoots doubt, discouragements and disbelief; lustful imaginations, sophisticated arguments and judgmental thoughts into our mind. If we receive these fiery destructive ideas and thought bombs, they will conceive deceit in the secret chambers of our soul. Destructive thoughts, ideas and imaginations incubated in the mind are like dormant dynamites that will be ignited by emotions, incidents or memories. Inflamed ‘thought bombs’ burst into anger, rage, resentment and give birth to detestable sin. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. (James 1:15).

Have you struggled to overcome a subtle negative comment from a friend, colleague or a family member for hours or even days? That was a toxic thought bomb! A brewed ‘thought bomb’ forms “toxic thought bubbles” of negativity, hideous imaginations or  argumentative philosophies that occupy, poison and dominate the mind.

Three ways to burst the thought bombs and toxic bubbles:

1.     Information: The human brain is complex, complicated and coherent. Being informed adds knowledge, logic and understanding to our reactions and helps us to control our actions. A human mind can process around 800 words a minute and can paint a portrait immediately. When we hear “pink elephant”, the picture of the pink elephant appears in our mind. When a pessimistic, profane or piggish ‘thought bomb’ is dropped into our head, the portrait of a defeated, abased or abrasive  “self” is unconsciously imprinted in our mind. Know your brain power and burst the toxic thought bomb immediately before it prints the negative image in your mind.

2.     Application“Where the mind goes the man goes,” We don’t have to be a neuroscientist to know this. Jesus said, “A wise man hears My word and obeys it, but a foolish man has head knowledge but does not apply it” (paraphrased). When emotions rush and push us to react – stop, think and digest before you retort. Dr. Charles Stanley says “HALT” when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired”. We are vulnerable when we are physically and emotionally exhausted. Emotional flood can drown us into the deep sea of trouble. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry (James 1:19). Application of knowledge is wisdom – be wise and burst the toxic thought bomb.

3.     Destruction: Thought bombs are the cause of depression, anxiety and stress. They are dynamites that can destroy our lives. The only way to destroy the ‘toxic thought bubbles’ are to use divine weapons. Test check each thought and validate its authenticity, accuracy and legitimacy.  If it is destructive and not constructive or informative, destroy it before it hatches, infects and inflicts the mind. Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). If the thoughts are prideful, puffed or disparaging, doubtful, demeaning or debasing they are toxic thought bombs. Destroy the toxic thought bombs before it destroys you.

Attack and destroy the thought bombs immediately with three divine weapons – the blood of Jesus, the Word of God and the name of Jesus.  Don’t give a foothold to the devil.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4).

Prayer: Dear Jesus, help me to be vigilant and wise to destroy the toxic thought bombs as soon as they attack my mind. Amen
