Matthew 22:37 Jesus declared, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
The brain is arguably the most important organ in the human body. It controls and coordinates actions and reactions, allows us to think and feel, and enables us to have memories and feelings. Our mind is the manifestation of our thoughts, ideas, memory, perceptions, emotions and imaginations. Brain however is not our mind but is the spectrum in which our mind resides and operates. Jesus clearly deciphered the functionality of love between the heart, soul and mind. Love from the heart is different to the soul and the mind. Today, our focus will be on the mind-love connection, coordination and correlation.
Mind is mainly the ‘faculty of intelligence’ of the human body. When Jesus said, love the Lord with all your mind, our love for the Lord must overrule intelligent arguments, squabbles or disagreements that brainpower brings against the Word of God. Colossians 2:8 “Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.” Vain philosophies challenging the omnipotence, opulence or omniscience of God will erode our mind of obeisance, integrity and love for Him.
Three expressions of love through our mind:
1. Memory: Mind is the memory box of the human body. What we meditate on will permeate into our soul. Atheism is just a brainy argument that there is no intelligence higher than that of man yet, it is unable to define the origin nor the destination of the soul. Where pride dominates the thinking, the mind will be filled with intelligent parenthesis, paradigms and prognosis and will have no room for divine revelation. Psalms 19:7b His teachings last forever, and they give wisdom to ordinary people. Love is proved in our meditation, deliberation and memorization.
2. Movements: Mind controls our actions, reactions and movements. Our controlled response to the challenges, crisis and confrontations is the evidence to the supremacy of Christ over our life. Our movements that are validated by our conscience, under the light of God’s Word, is the affirmation of our love for Him. If we truly love God, we could never entertain ourselves with perversion and be pleased with ourselves. Love is proved in our reactions, reflections and responses. .
3. Mind(Brainpower): Human intelligence, as powerful as it may be, is only a minuscule of God’s pre-eminent wisdom. It is like an ant trying to understand human anatomy. Hence, loving the Lord with our mind simply means bringing human intellect, ideologies, worldly opinions, imaginations and proud pretence under the obedience of God’s Word. If someone tries to understand God with the limited resources of the brilliant human brainpower, they will fail terribly. Only love will reveal more of His power, not cleverness, sharpness or brilliance. This is why atheists, agnostics and anthropologists struggle to understand the supremacy of God. Love will subjugate our acumen, analysis and aptitude under the obedience of Christ Jesus.
Do not test the Lord with your mind. Our brainpower is like the intelligence of an ant trying to understand human physiology and anatomy; Only,sincere, pure, childlike love will reveal more of Him to you and me.
2 Corinthians 10:5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, I surrender every proud hindrance and rebellious thought that questions your dominion over humanity. May you increase and may I decrease. Amen
