22 June 2021 – Physiology of Love – Part 5

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Love of the soul is discretely different to the love of the mind and the heart. While Mind-love connection is conditional, contingent and controlled by the limitations of human brainpower, intelligence and perspicacity; Soul-love liaison is driven by “feelings”. Soul is the seat of emotions, willpower and understanding. Normally, our emotions are erratic and would vary with the circumstances, challenges and conditions around us. The emotional climate could change from serene, quiet and peaceful to tumultuous, threatening and turbulent in a few minutes. Loving the Lord with all of our soul will keep our emotions constant irrespective of the cloud, chaos or catastrophe.

The physiology of emotions is closely linked to the nervous system and is reflected through our expressions and behaviours. Psalms 125:1 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. The evidence of a person who loves the Lord with “all their soul” is in their tranquillity in the midst of the trial. A soul that is in love with the Saviour will find a song to sing through the storm.

Three love languages of the soul:

1.     Serenity: A soul that loves the Lord will experience peace in the pandemonium. “Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means” –  Ronald Reagan. Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. When we see the Almighty seated as the King of the universe, the present tornado will not terrify us.

2.     Security: A soul that loves the Lord will experience safety in the midst of a struggle. Psalms 27:3 “Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.” Safety and security are not in our bank balance, investments or wealth, it is in the protection we enjoy in the Lord. A soul that loves the Lord will not fret at changes, cringe at challenges or become contemptuous at uncertainties, as it is anchored in the Lord and His Word.                                                                                                                                                                                                             .

3.     Song: The physiology of the soul is guarded by songs of praise. When the brain foresees danger, the sympathetic nervous system alerts the body to respond to dangerous or stressful situations. Heart starts thumping fast, palms become sweaty and blood pressure rises. However, when the soul starts shivering, love starts singing in the soul that is swimming in ‘love’. When we love the Lord with all our soul, we will not hear ourselves mourning, complaining or bickering but praising, worshipping and singing through the squalls of life.

The language of the ‘soul in love’ with the Saviour is serenity, sincerity and singing. A soul marinated in love will never fear, frown or fail. Love the Lord with all of your will, emotions and feelings.

Psalms 103:1-2 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, if I faint in the day of adversity my strength is small and my love for you is frail. I anchor my soul in your strength. Help my love for you to supersede the feelings, emotions and commotions of the soul. Amen
